ParticipantI’m new, and I’d love to do an essay.
I’ll work on one tonight to tomorrow (not like I’m doing anything else right now).
I wasn’t around to submit pix, so this is th eonly way to contribute, and I’d like to. This hobby’s been important to me this year.

ParticipantI don’t think the mood is “dark” do much as really stylized.
Too many people are sheep and won’t want to risk being different from others. Those that can get into this… more power to ’em.
One reason more of us don’t shoot like this is access to sets. I’d love to find stairs like those in one of the images. There’s a few homes around here with them, but I’d need permission, or to buy tickets (like the Eastman House). I suppose if I had more (interesting) friends, the problem would resolve itself.

ParticipantThanx! The bride it is.
Just wasn’t sure if it fit the theme enough.

ParticipantFinally found my spiderman software… might have something for this theme after all…

ParticipantOK… I finally got a few of these together.
I got one for crime, and another that’s a moody alley. Happy with thoe (regardless of how they’ll do with the voters.)But…
I have 3 more and can’t really decide on which to use. So I come to you guys. Of these:http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7064/6907891561_e929b5d0cb_b.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7197/6907891583_d5331e9843_b.jpgWhich most evokes “noir”?
Two are children’s graves, and one’s a bride shot, but I think it’s got the mood just right, but I’m not sure how it’ll play.
Help?

ParticipantI guess the biggest complaint we all have is with the rise of camera-phones and the technological increase quantity has no bearing on quality.
I mean, I went to Italy for 13 days, took a Nikon and a tripod, took 5000 pix, and as yet have posted very very few from that trip. Including use in classroom and sharing with parents and stuff, I’ve shown maybe 100 or so of what I took. I try to keep my quality/quantity ratio balanced so that people think of me as the artiste I (pretentiously) want to be seen as.
Of course, then I come here and every week find out just how wrong my delusion really is. 😉
Still… gotta have pride in one’s work, y’know?

ParticipantGiven that this theme is kicking my ass, I’m wondering if it’s kosher to go with the word “noir” and make a photo with a “noir”-ish feel.
I’ve got some alleys from Italy that, if converted to B/W and grained up a bit would probably be very noir-ish. I could also spend some time Monday or Tuesday poking around the city near me for some alleys or buildings with art deco entrances, or something.
Just some questions top open this up a bit (I’m not normally one for waiting until the last minute to shoot something, but this one’s got me all bumfuzzled).

ParticipantIf I can get any shots for this other than of police at work or the cemetery I’ll be surprised.
As much as I like this theme, I think I’ll like other people’s results more than my own. I’m currently IN a “scary part of my psyche” phase IRL, but I’m not feeling like I know what to shoot for this. The only thing I can think of is phobias, and i don’t have any good shots of spiders since moving to my DSLR… just haven’t come across those massive ones like we saw in South Carolina a couple years ago.
rambling… sorry…

ParticipantI don’t hate it, I just think it’s a fad that’s going away before long.
The problem is that this part of your statement is not true.
I agree with everything said above about photography in general, regardless of the tools.
The advent of digital photography has made the simple act of taking the picture and getting the image out of the camera nearly free. The large screen size of the iPhone and its Droid/Android cousins has removed even the need to get the image out of the camera.
This is a blessing to people like us who care about composition and quality. It’s a blessing to people like me who are cheap.
The problem here isn’t even the people who take crappy photos of everything. Ever since I became aware of composition and the ability to take a good photo in-camera going on vacation to popular places has been an exercise in not yelling at people. My wife has to literally make me take her photo of her standing in front of stuff, and I’ll only use her camera for it. Even then, I do what I can to introduce the element of composition and quality (face away from the sun, move in close you don’t need the entire sign, etc.). People who ask me to take their picture at vacation locations are always pleasantly surprised by what shows up in their lcd screeen when I’m done. I never just take 1. One lady in Rome handed me her Nikon, and when I stuck my 55-200 on her body to take a better photo of her on the Spanish steps, she really appreciated it.
Wow… this is getting long and windy.
tl;dr version – Digital photography only exacerbates a problem that’s been around a long long time. The internet makes it easier to share the crap. Don’t blame the iPhone, blame the people. And it ain’t going away any time soon.

ParticipantI hate to be the complainer but SageC 2012-02-16 01:00:53 AM thinks Dodger Stadium – April 13th, 2010 is a place of worship. I wish people would read the first post before posting.
This post is funnier when combined with your avatar.

ParticipantMy B-Side for this week:
The Lutheran Church in Venice, Italy
Astoundingly, my dad and I found the Lutheran Church in Venice. It was the plainest church we found all vacation. It was kind of a relief after all the WOW. However, it’s still a church in Italy – that’s a Titian (the big painting) and a Cranach portrait of Luther (the small one to the right).
Winnowing down to 4, much less 3, was hard this week. Italy’s major cities are STUPID with churches.

ParticipantSeems like from discussion this would be kosher, but I’m double-checking. I’m not planning on submitting this one in particular, but clearing it up for other ideas:

Line of Lanterns by Farktographer1, on FlickrJust not sure because it’s not absolutely blatant that this is a temple.
I see roof, I see walls… it’s a bit open, but can be another wedged in qualifier… again, the voters will have the ultimate say.

ParticipantI am soooooooo stealing this.
I need a new career!
(ennuipoet… have I got a business plan idea for you…)

Participanthow about buildings that used to have a roof? have some potentials of ruined abbeys churches in the UK and France.
I’m cool with that. I just didn’t want Stonehenge, or crop circles and stuff. It should be a building dedicated to some worship practice.
staplermofo – Scientology is a form of worship. I’ve got my opinions, but people believe it, and if you can make it look good (and it’s a building) go for it. The Muslim foot washing fountain – if it’s in the courtyard and you catch the mosque in the image, or if it’s indoors (as the one at the local mosque I’ve visited is), I can’t see a major problem with that. I suppose the “Bible Study Room” could work, so long as you’re not just shooting your den or something. If it’s like the Christian Science Reading Room sort of deal, I can see that being wedged into fitting the theme. The voters WILL let you know just how close to the theme you are.
