I’m leaning towards “bacon that’s still alive” for my entries.

(I’m apparently a blasphemer in that we don’t use/make bacon in our home for a variety of reasons.)

I bring this up because I am wondering if I am allowed to use representations of swine (statuary, stuffed animals, cartoonish imagery on murals or t-shirts) as part of my entry?

If not, I understand, just askin’…

I have two others if anyone’s interested.

I’m always interested, but being on the east coast it’s not too much of an issue (usually) to stay up ’til midnight to post.

Until I start doing PSes again I won’t be paying for a sponsorship, so you probably won’t get the gift back.

Just thought I’d lay it all out there. If others are more worthy (other Europeans like Farktographer for instance) I won’t be too upset to be passed over. Being able to go to bed before midnight by choice is nice, however.

Kestrana, I’m still a bit confused as to whether we’re looking more for ‘desolate, dead, nothing to be seen here’ or ‘remote, no one around, living vegetation, can be pretty’ types of things.

Desolate to me is ‘ugly’, while a winter scene or the desert can be beautiful.

I’m not kestrana but let me re-post the description:

Landscapes that imply remoteness, such as deserts, swamps, bare trees, winter scenery.

I’ve bolded the parts that I paid most attention to when shooting and selecting pictures to use. I’m nowhere near a desert, I’ve got a few decent swamp photos from the Adirondacks, but they don’t really imply remoteness (and were taken with the old Olympus).

I do hope 2 of mine are beautiful, while the third is somewhat experimental in terms of trying to get votes with it.

Hell, one of my pretty ones depends on bare trees for its effect, as there’s a road to the right with cars.

I hope this helps (although I’m not kestrana and can be over-ruled or ignored).

Not to speak for the contest submitter, but the first word in the description is “Landscapes”, so the meadow might, but the building might not, depending on how it’s shot… if it’s small enough in the frame to be a part of a larger landscape, I’d say “yea” but if the building fills the frame (or takes up a vast majority of it) I’d be less inclined to be supportive.

    But that’s just me.

Nothing to add, except that I can’t be the only one who’s ever been annoyed when a fiber shows up in the viewfinder because it landed on the mirror. Scared the pee outta me the first time it happened…

Got a response from Drew re: new voting. He said to let him know what happens with us after a couple weeks and as he said “we’re never opposed to fixing something if it’s broken”. Whatever that means.

There’s other people pissed off about it, so maybe majority rules will revert to the old way.

This curmudgeon begins to be happy.

Honestly, I don’t give a squat about the comment thread changes (I’m trying to figure out which loser checks his comments for votes) but the changes are not too beneficial in Farktography IMHO (except, possibly, for the occasional intentional comedy contest).

I’d like to see a reversion to the old way for Farktography, at least. The various contest threads can probably be re-coded. I can see the need in most Photoshop threads as well as the caption contests, but Farktography is a different animal. Hell, even the caption contests probably could use just the “funny” button.

My project is to do the thing ravnostic mentioned, and maybe winning one of those… winning just one would be sweet. More would be asking too much, I think, given the competition.

Apparently three people find bouys nailed to a wall as funny. With some well placed greenlights, the “funny” button could be used for some rather interesting research into group humor on the internet.

Some of the “Funny” votes are based on getting the pun. Without your caption, it wouldn’t have gotten the funny votes.

I only checked to see if anybody thought “Sexy Shop” was funny. Somebody did. Mostly funny votes are going to the cat photos.

It’s Fark… what did we expect?

Regarding white balance specifically, I do what others have described here – shoot in Auto and then adjust in post if necessary. However there’s a technique that hasn’t been mentioned yet that I believe the pros use – a white balance card. This is a static device (I’ve seen it in the shape of cards or cubes) with calibrated gray color(s) on it that you shoot before the photo session while setting your camera to custom white balance. The camera then adjusts its white balance so that the card is truly gray. I’ve probably got some details wrong there as I’ve never actually used one, but that’s the general idea.

This is mostly what I was wondering about. I majored in photography in high school, and worked exclusively in B&W at that point (it’s been 20+ years). We didn’t do squat with the white card metering and the pix came out good, but we were made aware of the technique. I figured the cameras had a method for attacking this, and I was wondering what it might be. I was also wondering about the importance of it.
I pretty much have all the answers to my questions at this point. If I ever decide to pursue this for money, it’s definitely something I will spend some time researching it so that my product for sale is of an irreproachable quality.

I’ll look into the pre-sets, and when I feel it’s warranted, I’ll begin including RAW in my shooting repertoire. For now, I guess continuing to try to grab the best shot SOOC will be the best policy. Ain’t nothin’ like having that shot show up on your monitor and having your heart skip a beat because you GOT IT. Every time that happens, it’s a top ten shot.

One of these days that’ll be a number 1 shot.

    One of these days…

While I voted for “ignore funny” I’d like to see the counting kept separate mostly because most of our contests don’t really encourage “teh funnay.” Those that do (Apples v. Oranges, for example, or a Barbie one) will definitely benefit from the new scheme because concept can be separated from execution.

If we include Funny in the overall votes count, we (I think) begin the process of diluting the product we produce.

I’m getting beaten every week by product that is clearly better than what I’m contributing. I keep at it because if I can climb to the top, it will mean something. If I can achieve success merely by getting my niece to do something stupid, or if I start getting beat by weaker product that is non-creative slapstick/crap/whatever, it will be depressing and discouraging.

While I’ve largely quit participating in the PS threads for a variety of reasons, I am fairly confident that the new scheme will only encourage more cliche crap in those contests. I don’t think we need to encourage stupid-face shots, kick in the crotch shots, etc. Keep funny separate if we must count it at all.

    Please.

So it sounds mostly like the key (if I’m going to give a hoot) is to shoot in RAW and do any color-corrections in post.

Due to file sizes, I haven’t shot in RAW yet. If my PP program’s PS3, how much more correction-ability is there in RAW as opposed to the 4K+pixel wide shots I use? Given my PS-er’s heart, I feel I get a butt-load of flexibility already. Is there really that much of a difference?

(I understand the concept of quality-loss every time I make a correction and then re-save a .jpg, so there’s that benefit I already know about.)

They’re all terrific, but in honesty (because I’m that kind of jerk) the one with the bridge in the background is probably the weakest. The bridge colors are too close to the bird’s colors, and therefor are a bit distracting.

    The others are pure awesome.

I guess you’ve mostly answered most of my questions.

I’ve been doing a little reading (my wife got me the premier issue of NPhoto Magazine for Christmas). The “professionals” seem to pay attention to white balance, and I was just wondering what the point was and if I could do anything to make my pictures better using it.

I guess for a while I’ll keep leaving it on auto. I’ll look into the cloudy and florescent pre-sets.

Oh good… this one I’ve got ideas and stuff for… now I’ve just got longer to procrastinate on the sleeves.
