ParticipantI think what concerns me about layers is that it’s kind of like compositing different exposures, which is too similar to HDR for my tastes. But I’m open to a clarifying discussion (probably should put it on another board/thread, though!). I don’t use a lot of that kind of post processing myself, mostly just curves, contrast, saturation, and unsharp mask.
I generally restrict my Farktography post-processing to those same tools and aside from images scanned from negatives (dust/dirt/scratch correction) apply the to the entire image. You can do quite a lot with curves in particular. In fact I think adjusting the “red” curve and then maybe desaturating the “red” color in the saturation tool would be an effective way to adjust the Canon images with overloaded red colors. Maybe it would be interesting to post before/after photos? Or even setup a thread where people could submit images and we could all post our suggestions for how we would adjust them?

ParticipantOMG Kestrana, those colors in your flower shot are gorgeous! I’ve never seen one like it, do you know what kind of flower that is?
Unfortunately no. I’ve looked on the Central Park flower website and several tropical websites. Found some other pictures of the same flower on Flickr with such helpful names as “Blue Flower”.
After some Googling I think it could be something called Tibouchina urvilleana. The unusual hook shaped stamens are what made the connection for me.

ParticipantSooo yeah, sinus infection and probable strep. Looking at my throat, the doctor was shocked the test was negative, and I hadn’t thought to tell him I’d gargled with alcohol-based mouthwash this morning (whoops). Going back to bed now.
That sounds like an ugly combination! I hope your loved ones treat you a queen (or at least a duchess) until the invading microbes from hell leave your system. I’ve had sinus infections from time to time since I was a kid. And if you haven’t had that pleasure much, just know they can really knock you for a loop. The symptoms can include things like dizziness, so be careful while bellydancing. 🙂
I’ve had strep throat before too, that’s just one big dose of “it hurts to be alive” that brings out all my inner evil. The only thing that helped me with those was sleep and steaming hot showers. Ick… Get well soon!

ParticipantI’ve picked up some Nikon/Nikkor glass… pawn shops are awesome…
Oooooo! My bank account really wishes you hadn’t put that astoundingly intriguing idea into my head…

ParticipantI never thought lichen was fungus, but when I looked it up on Wikipedia (which is NEVER wrong, right?) I found this…
“Lichens are composite organisms consisting of a symbiotic association of a fungus (the mycobiont) with a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont or phycobiont), etc…”
So what do you know, it’s part fungus after all. And I might actual have something to post this week after all.

ParticipantChoc-Ful-A, I especially liked your entries this week.
Thank you sir! I had fun with this one and ended up I voting for quite a lot of entries. But given my background in fishing, crabbing, dredging for oysters (which is disgusting btw) and all the aquariums I’ve kept, it’s probably no surprise that I found this theme engaging.
I’m such a fish/crustacean nerd that I even noticed all the crabs in Ennuipoet‘s b-side photos were female. 🙂

ParticipantMy dad is commercial fisherman but I moved to the other side of the country 10 years ago and couldn’t find the negatives with the photos I remember taking. So I took a trip to a Monterey Bay Aquarium a couple of weeks ago instead. Here’s a couple b-sides from that trip.
Leafy Sea Dragon (extra fancy Seahorse basically)

ParticipantIt’s a nice favor to warn me if you’re posting tentacles!
/pathological fear of tentacles
//no shit panic attacks
///octopi is right outI’ve got a couple jellyfish photos on my short list FYI. I don’t know if they count as the sort of tentacles that creep you out, but I wanted to put it out there just in case. I can give you a preview link if you’d like to see them in advance.

ParticipantYou could play with the idea of photographing the opposite of “Listen” as if the idea was “You Should Listen”. Maybe something like a guy in a group of people shouting/tense and having them pretend not to hear. I can see a busy street scene with people rushing to/fro and a guy stopped, trying to get people to listen to him. Just an idea, but inverting the meaning might be interesting.

ParticipantYou can also use the D-Lighting feature in Capture NX2. I prefer that over doing it in-camera since you can do fine adjustments, opacity changes, etc..
a bit of googling tells me that costs money. and the NEF codex just let’s you see the photo from RAW. and i have PS7 which won’t work either.
i may shoot some NEF/jpeg to check write times and play with the NEF is i can find something free to use. more googling finds a site that explains how to use the Gimp with NEF. guess i’ll try that.
The ufraw package is free, runs on every platform, and can read just about any native camera RAW format. So you can install that and use it as a bridge to convert RAW files from any software into a format PS7 (or other mangling software) can read. Here’s a link to the page where you can get ufraw.

ParticipantI like color contests, so I’m already biased, but wow… There’s some serious quality AND quantity this week. And while it sounds like a tired cliche at this point, I have to note that I don’t think I’ve voted for as many entries as I did this time.

ParticipantI’m getting an error with that link saying that the file doesn’t exist.
Oops. My bad.

(18, not 15.) Theoretically this should work, but I’m at work and while I can log into my FTP via explorer, I cannot download the file here to verify. But that is the correct location.
I’m stilling getting a 404 – Not Found error, but don’t worry about it. I was just goofing anyway and work/life just took a drastic turn in the horrific chaos direction. So not much fun time for me in the near future. I even missed the “green” contest, grrr…

ParticipantA fine eye, Choc, on the crooked; I rotated to align to the column on the left. Since playing with jpg kills quality, how about a look at the original RAW image:
http://fossilspringsaz.com/pics/2010/sep/15/img_1911.cr2 (40% uploaded now, so wait 5 minutes or so from post time.)
Hope you can view Canon RAW!!
I think the software I use can read just about any raw format, so I’ll give it a shot. 🙂

ParticipantJust for grins, I took the 3rd image, rotated it to make different elements perfectly straight, then found a decent crop within that new shape, and did some global color/light adjustments to pull out a bit more detail in the bright areas without loosing detail in the mid/dark areas. I think the rotate makes a big difference, since it looked crooked to me in the original.

I like the first of your three photos A LOT, but all of them are very nice, especially since they were “bonus” shots while out shooting something else.
