I already knew how much I enjoyed the FSM, but there’s nothing like a little absence to clarify exactly how much you like something…

So I’ll take this opportunity to say thanks for the time/effort you spend maintaining the site. It’s a great resource and makes participating in the Farktography contests even better for me.

Those are all otherworldly and amazing to me since I just don’t have any experience with that level of “cold”. I like the sense of scale the person (and dogs?) gives in IMG_1138.jpg. And the saturated aqua tones against very dark backgrounds in images IMG_1169.jpg thru IMG_1184.jpg are really beautiful. Image 1170 looks like the northern entrance to Hell. 🙂 All that’s missing is a blue three headed dog with an icicle spiked collar!

How long were you out there to get all those shots?

I like the ice bokeh and the chain link fence. In that order. But I’d vote for both.

I agree, the bokeh and the fence (in that order) are my favorites too. I like all of them though, and for what it’s worth I think the gloves on the pole would probably be most popular with the voting public.

Here a gallery of B-Sides from this week’s contest in case you still want more rocks!

I had every intention of posting this shot from Joshua Tree but the 3 people that reviewed the finalists didn’t like it. They were pushing for this hazy ocean cliff and this jagged wall of rocks in Sequoia National Park.

Nobody agreed on which shots to pick this week. So it was very hard to decide what to use. Is it too early to suggest this be added to the list of recurring themes? 🙂

Heh – Farktography really amuses and confounds me sometimes, but that’s okay. Elsinore and Choc-Ful-A, I loved yours.

Thanks! I really liked this contest and had a bunch of ideas for shooting groups of pictures around a common subject (with some unusual variation). But real life got in the way and I ended up looking for things in the archives photo’s I’ve taken. So I’m glad to hear you liked the pics.

I’d be interested to hear if other people found the idea of a multi-picture theme as interesting as I did. If so, maybe we can think of another theme that encourages the same sort of story telling? I’d like another chance to shoot some photo sequences to convey some complex message again.

victory was so close I could taste it.

Yup, I know what you mean. And since I never vote for my own entries (just a personal choice), missing first place by one vote really tested my resolve. But 2nd place is fantastic for me, since it’s my highest finish ever for a Farktography contest. I really do enter Fark contests primarily to force me to produce something that require creativity. In other words it’s my anti-work stress therapy. So as long as I like my entries then I’m happy regardless of the votes.

Ironically, Friday that same week I won a Photoshop contest (only the second time ever) which was based on a photograph I took. I have no idea why the stars lined up, but the weekend and this week have been pure hell. So I’m ready to go back to a couple votes here and there if it means work and home life will calm down as well. 🙂

Here are two “b-sides” from this contest in case you need more brown in your day. 🙂

You might give UFRaw a try: http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/index.html

That’s what I use for all my images. I’m shooting with a D80 in raw mode.

there’s some weirdness in the thread. A recently posted picture just showed up before the intro post.

The date of the posting that popped to the head of the line is 1/14 even though it was obviously posted on 1/15. Once that happened, the sorting of the entries makes sense.

There’s a posting from Lyshk0 at 2009-01-14 01:45:49 PM which doesn’t have voting enabled, then the same pic is posted with voting on at 2009-01-15 01:46:34 AM. In case that helps find the weird entries. So it looks like the first posting’s date is off by 12 hours.

I’ve had my DSLR since June and after I found a good Linux tool for decoding RAW images I switched. Also, memory cards seem to drop in price every month, so the size is becoming less and less of a concern. When I got my camera, they were selling good 8G cards for $44.

Out of the blue my guy came home from the local grocery store with a bag of dry ice. So taking that as a sign from some Higher Photographer I took some handheld shots and submitted them. I’m late but there, which is a nice surprise. I had no idea grocery stores sold dry ice and no idea why he bought it. Weird…

Screwjack and Elsinore… I’ll be the first to ask a stupid nitpicky question. What defines a “(human) sculpture”? I found (and shot) an interesting pile of rocks down by the river that was clearly placed together by human hands, though obviously not for profit or audience or whatnot. Probably just somebody bored or a child playing. Is this a sculpture? I’d love to make a personal theme of found piles of rocks, but it may be absolutely specifically forbidden for this contest. If so, I’ll have to rev up my brain to think of a contest idea that would fit my concept. 😉

/I DID mean to bring this question up on the forums before it actually got scheduled… but I lagged. 😛

If you decide to go with another theme to cover the arranged rocks here’s a suggestion to consider.

    Imposing Order on Chaos
    —
Show us evidence of people attempting to rearrange the natural state of things to suit their needs

Just a strawman to get the creative juices flowing. 🙂

WOW! I have about 35,000 images in my hard drive and external drive My pictures folder is 25gb and the external drive has 155gb of photos. 😯

    …text deleted…

It is ground zero reflected in the World Financial Center building

Ha! The biggest difference I’ve noticed between using a digital camera versus film is the sheer volume of photos I end up with. It’s just too easy to take 200+ shots in one outing with a digital camera. No film to buy, lug around, change, have developed, etc… So I can see winding up just like you after this continues for awhile. How long has it taken to rack up that much disk use?

And that reflection shot is quite nice, I miss visiting New York. It’s not as easy to zip up for a weekend when your starting point is California and not Washington DC.

Update to previous post… It’s been pulled from the main page and now the thread says,

Clicked 168 times; will post to Main on Thu, 01 Jan 2009 at 12:01 AM

so I think we’re back to normal midnight launch time. There were some votes already, so presumably they will just carry over.
