ParticipantThat’s a great shot, I like the shimmering/glowing effect the soft focus bits (and saturated colors) add.

ParticipantI hate one b-side this week. It’s from the same cemetery as the three I posted. I took the shot because I liked the way the white stone aged to a high contrast black/grey/white pattern over the course of ~140 years. But while editing it I finally made out the words and I really like the elegant wording that introduced the woman’s name. It reads:
The Last Tribute Of Grateful Love To The Memory Of Mrs. Mary McLean
I think that’s a beautiful, respectful sentiment for a passed loved one. I was in such a hurry when taking the photos since it was the last day of a business trip, I was on the way to the airport with very little time, and on top of that someone was walking around shooing people out since the cemetery was closing in 15 minutes. So I really had no idea what was on the headstone when I took the shot.

Participant“What chupathingie said…” I use GIMP for all editing and ufraw from the command line (scripted on Linux) to convert NEF files to PNG before editing them.
Also, I prefer shooting in raw mode doing as little as possible in the camera. I don’t even look at the images, even to delete complete goofs, until I upload them onto the computer.

ParticipantAll right. Any input for #3?

http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/Springdale_0020.jpg3rd one (sun flare) wins it for me.
THIS
I agree,
Lens Flare = most votes
But I like the first one best personally though, it’s a beautiful shot.

ParticipantThere was one photo this week which I really liked but didn’t include in the 3 I posted. I’ve always found Needlefish fascinating, they are like living javelins with huge staring eyes and very long pointy jaws lined with sharp vicious looking teeth. Well I got two shots of a school of them when snorkeling in Kauai using an underwater capable point & shoot. I didn’t have high hopes for the photo, but one of them came out pretty nicely.
So while I thought better of posting it and relegated it to “b-side” status for this contest, I thought it was worth posting here.

ParticipantThere are a lot of photos I like in tonight’s contest, but there’s one I want to call out because it also made me laugh (at work even, which was very needed today). The seagull entry from iwanttoeatyourchildren gives a nice sense of the “essence” of an opportunistic scavenger. But it could also be the caption ’cause the look on that bird’s face definitely says “I would eat your children if I was bigger”. Nicely done!

ParticipantStaph? I had shingles at age 15 that went into staph, put me up in the hospital for a week. Extend to him my well-wishes!!
Hm dunno, but at one point he was having hallucinations, and he can’t lift anything heavier than his iPhone. I told him between his spider bite from hell and shingles from hell, he certainly doesn’t half-ass his medical stuff.
That’s awful! I hope he’s done with “from hell” health issues and whatever bad karma he built up from a past life is finally worked out.

ParticipantHoly hell U-Man. That farking sucks 🙁
That’s exactly what came to mind when I read that story. I’d be in the camera shop (or ordering online) to get a replacement the next day. You gotta get right back up on the bike and ride you know…

Participantoddmind, I immediately liked your “Highway 35, Woodside, California” shot when I saw it Wednesday night. And since I live in the area, sometimes driving home through Woodside when i-280 is congested, I wanted to figure out where it was taken. Well I finally got time to consult Google Maps today and realized Highway 35 is Skyline Drive! That’s one of my favorite destinations when I feel like I need to escape the stress of a normal day and got for a drive. You really captured the mysterious, larger than life feeling you get driving through the trees up there. It’s a fantastic photo.

ParticipantEnnuipoet, I thought your comment about my crater photo in the contest was great. I thought about replying with “Yeah, context is important when using the words ‘rim’ and ‘plug'” but I didn’t want to get smacked for threadjacking. 🙂 So I’ll note here that yeah that’s pretty much what I thought when I stumbled upon that sign last weekend. I would have laughed except I was winded from hiking a very loose gravel path up the side of the crater.

ParticipantI don’t really understand why people needed that message in the first place – there’s a link to check the vote totals right there at the top of the page. I say post it in the Farktography forum after the thread closes and be done with the whole trying to call it before the thing ends problem altogether….
I came here to post pretty much exactly that. If you want to post after the contest closes, that might be an alternative. But essentially I don’t think the moderator should have to post congrats messages for every contest. You do enough already without having to drag that anchor around as well, especially if the results are unclear at the end much of the time.

ParticipantI really, really like this theme but real life is not cooperating with my photographic interests lately. So I’ll be lurking and voting unless a last minute archive-dive turns up something (again). Good luck all!

ParticipantOK, I really don’t know if I’ll be able to come up with something for this, but I like the idea. So what the hell, I’m in for +1.

ParticipantBut what’s /p/ and why does it cause the precipitous fall in self-perception?
I was wondering that too?
And more importantly … where is farktography??? 😛
Most references to community based websites with a single letter between two slashes are sections of “4chan.org”. There does appear to be a /p/ area in 4chan, but there’s no way I’m going to go to any pat of the website while at work. 🙂 I’ll check when I get home later.
NOTE: I edited this to correct the website address to 4chan.ORG since the other one is, uh, very wrong.

ParticipantThere’s some great photos in that gallery! I really like how some of them capture the expanse of the landscape including the color of the sky and the crisp detail of the clouds.
