I hate it when you impact the grou. It’s so messy to clean up.

What a Gro(osalugg) might look like.

ennuipoet did you see The Gates in central park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gates) when it was up? and if so what did you think of it. to me this is more of the same kind of thing. art is in the eye of the beholder and IMO this iPhone shit isn’t art.

The gates happened the year I moved up here but I never saw them. They seemed to me to be nice but not what I call “art”. But, I have never been up on the art world, 99% of it is lost on me.

    Circus peanuts & peeps, man.

Lack of funding makes even that small of a purchase tricky right now. And I haven’t seen either of those at the only grocery store in town yet.

On a different note I might be out for a while because of this lack of funding. I have a couple hundred dollar fine I can’t pay and I might end up spending 90 days behind bars. Nevada Pot laws are awful. Although not as bad as twenty years ago I guess. My birthday celebration combined with a neighbor who calls the cops for what I consider really petty shit got me in trouble. And then unemployment has pushed me to likely jail time. So if you all don’t hear from me for a few months don’t worry I will be back.

Dude, that seriously sucks, insult to injury! Hope things turn out for you, man!

According to Gwinny, Elsinore is handling out moaning and complaining about the voting so I am thinking we should probably talk to Els about it.

Sorry guys, I hate to be the one who breaks it to you but film is dead. D-E-A-D dead. Sure there will always be film and old cameras around to play with just like there are model T’s around to drive, but do you really want to drive the model T every day when the cheapest Hyundai out there drives a 1000 times better and is far simpler to operate?

It’s no different with cameras. Why should I bust out my Holga, load film, take 12 shots, go through all the BS of developing at home when I can take a shot that is virtually identical with my iPhone? Because I love the smell of developer? Hardly…

Everything this guy did with his iPhone I could reproduce in Photoshop on pictures taken with any DSLR. Would you hate so passionately if they were taken with a 5D MKII?

I think his point was to show that he could take compelling shots in adverse conditions with an iPhone. I think he succeeded.

My loathing would be just as acute if he shot them on a Holga or Diana and then processed them. I am talking about standards of professional journalism. It’s a free country, for now, so if your “art” leads you into shooting photos on a cardboard Kodak and processed in your own urine, go for it. If you want to recreate the Sistine Chapel on your iphone, knock yourself out. If you are professional journalist commission to do a job, you better damn well do it PROFESSIONALLY. These shots should not rise to the standards of contemporary photojournalism in style or content. In this case, he literally “phoned it in”.

I went to a much smaller festival here in NYC last year http://www.flickr.com/photos/ennuipoet/sets/72157626184730347/ the City was all uptight about the powder being flung around. Why? Anthrax. Seriously.

As for wrapping, whenever I need to “weatherproof” my gear, I take a plastic shopping bag and white bandage tape. The bandage tape peels cleanly without leaving a residue on the body, though I never intentionally tape it to the body. Cut a whole in the end and (assuming you are using one)use your lens hood to secure to the front elements of the lens. Tape gently around the base and the handgrips leaving the back open for focusing and setting changes.

Well, it’s here and available for pre-order. In addition to whatever other improvements/changes, they apparently removed the on-camera flash and increased the price to $3500. The flash, not so big a deal. The $1K increase in price over the 5DII – really big freaking deal. WT-F’ing-F?

I thought the 5D never had an On Camera Flash. Clearly the increased price reflects the In Camera HDR mode, which will revolutionize Farktography forever! Now that we can do it in camera, HDR will RULE THE WORLD!!!! BWAH HAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Seriously, there some improvements the AF points, the new processor, do I think a thousand bucks worth? Not really. The more things they pour on a new camera the less and less it makes sense to me. I rarely take my camera out of Manual Mode, more and more I am manual focusing (though a lot of that is my main lens is getting a little buggy in the AF department and I don’t see replacing it any time soon) and I don’t shoot video (or have any desire to do so) so the only reason I might want the new 5D is because it is a status symbol. (But what a beautiful status symbol!)

Over at the Online Photographer ( http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2012/03/gaaaaaaaahhh-its-here.html) Mike makes a car comparison (Mike likes the Ow-Toh-Moh-Beels) and it made me realize that cameras are cars for me. I have NEVER been a “Car Guy” when I had a car I didn’t take very good care of it, never drooled over the fancy ones, never put armor all on the tires…you know, stuff guys do with cars. But cameras, well I’ve got all my Old Ones which I baby, and I LOVE the newest model, even if I can’t afford it, I drool over it. I always thought I was immune to the whole “Car Envy” thing, turns out I just replaced one over priced penis compensation device with another.

Do NOT make me show you how big my lens is!

Reversal films have been sliding into oblivion for years, since the 90’s at least. Kodak stopped making the Carousel in 2004 but sales were off long before that. When I was a kid people shot slides of their vacation and the cliches were true, they showed them to people when the returned. By the time I grew up, a stack of 4×5 prints was how people showed off the vacation and now, links on FB.

My slide experience was in HS, where we learned how to process Ektar and mount them but never I really did it afterwards. Still, it’s a sad day for Photography when these fade away.

Eschewing another Iphone/Hipstamatic rant, these professionally shot photos look like they were taken with an iphone in a bathroom stall. It is a case of “if anyone can do it why are we paying people to do it” that is killing professional photography. Here is a guy who, presumably, has the equipment and skill set to make the best of a bad situation. Instead he takes some sincerely mediocre photos and still gets them licensed. Why in the world who a accountant at a paper or magazine not look at this and decide he doesn’t need his photo staff?

What he SHOULD have done is taken this moment to show what a trained photographer with talent and skill is worth by making good photos in a bad situation. He didn’t have a Fast 50 in his bag and a couple of off camera flashes? It takes five minutes (if you know what you’re doing) to set up a simple two light shoot in a confined space. Throw the background out of focus with a wide open shutter and go! If I can do it (and I can, maybe not in five minutes, but fairly quick) surely a professional can?

I know that I am never going to shoot for National Geographic, or the New York Times, I accept that…but if the people working now don’t give a damn about showing the profession in the best possible light ALL THE TIME then there won’t BE such a thing as professional photojournalist in ten years.

/See, you guys thought I was gonna spew vitriol about iphone photograph didn’t you?

Still, I think the MOST important question we need answers to: how will it look with a Sepia Tone Filter and Polaroid Edges? Will there be native support for the Diana Lens Filters or will we need to download a filter set? 🙂

But it has so many megapixels it HAS to be good!

/Seriously, 41mp on a cellphone sensor a 1/4 of the size of a micro 4/3, don’t snap a shot in anything less than full sunlight!
