ParticipantHere, it’s less pretentious.
Not only is that hilarious, but underneath the veneer of stupidity, actually brilliant!

ParticipantCan you add history to the price because you think it will eventually have it?
Well, you can, but it doesn’t necessarily make it happen. One could argue that a Van Gogh in 1880 certainly would not have fetched the same price as it would in 1920 (to use to the 40 year time frame of this photograph) though his work challenged the accepted themes of the time and is subsequently recognized for it, and has increased in value because of that recognition.
Of course, one can look at a Van Gogh and immediately recognize who created the work, I don’t believe anyone can truly duplicate his work. The same cannot be said of this work. The argument here is Eggleston is breaking new ground in the art world, but that isn’t enough. One of the reasons a Van Gogh or a Picasso, or David holds up is the timelessness of the work. Generation after generation look on their art and are moved by it, changed in some fundamental way. I remember with vivid clarity seeing the Van Gogh’s in the National Gallery, I remember the light as they fell on the canvass, the texture of the brush strokes, the composition and the style, is part of this the name…yes, of course. Yet the name is not enough with the ingenuity of the art to make a masterpiece. I simply cannot look upon a washed out shot of a toy without context or composition and have the same emotional reaction as seeing the work of an accomplished master. I’ve seen Ansel Adams prints in galleries and FELT the composition, been moved by the vision. Hell, I’ve been far more emotionally charged by any number of works on Farktography than by this. Why aren’t U-Man’s or Orionid‘s work not worth half a million dollars? I’ve seen both of them challenge the accepted norms of photography on more than one occasion, straining the barriers of what is commonly accepted and achieving a visceral reaction to their work?
Because the art world doesn’t give a damn about that, it exists only to self fellatio their narrow definition of what has value.
This Eggelston print is not bad, or terrible or even over valued…people will pay what they are willing to pay for art. What it isn’t is objectively better than hundreds thousands of other photographs and only draws the kind of money it has because a few self selected experts decided it would be the name d’jour.
But what do I know, someday another jaded amateur may be snarking over the sale price of a Ullenius or a Buckwalter! 😛

ParticipantBilling: I have a simple ratio for that based on who and what I am asked to do. I take my hourly salary at my “real” job, double it and add $10, I always bill a minimum of four hours even if the shoot is short. (For shoots under four hours, I don’t charge “darkroom” time, for longer shoots I charge 1/2 the total time for processing. ) I have a day rate which is usually 25 to 50 less than a full eight hours of the hourly rate plus two hours of dark room time. While I’ve only used this formula for a few short shoots, I find it gives me a solid working number to estimate costs with and it is easily explainable when someone asked how I come up with number. It also makes coming up with solid numbers for a contract easy. If I were a full time pro, it also makes tax calculation simple.
I always do an estimate and a contract (always meaning the two times I’ve done this) for the shoot, you can find them online and personalize them easily. I have the client sign the estimate when they book and the contract in the day of the shoot. If you are traveling, I include transportation in the estimate and put it in the shoot contract. (This has never been an issue for me…yet).
If your client wants prints, decide on a price up front and create an estimate for the print costs with your original estimate…I actually do an estimate for a few simple package prices for prints (I use a formula based on the price of the Ink Jet Paper for size and number of prints, I then factor 1/2 of a full replacement of my printer ink plus my hourly rate, then I knock off whatever feels right for the size of the job as this can quickly become a significant number money wise. For large format prints that I need to send to the lab, I take the print cost and shipping, double it and add my hourly rate, usually one to two hours. I NEVER offer the client the ability to print directly from my online printer. Sorry, Charlie, I own the print and I am in control of the printing. DVD’s of low res images are usually chipped in free with a watermark.
On the pic side, nice job on the mix between flash and natural light! It’s tough to do that!
/I know TLDR 😀

ParticipantI think most of the down turn is a series of fairly complex themes requiring original content, which drives off the folks who like to pop in a shot from their archives. The voting thing has also played a role. I suspect we shall pick back up again as we come into a new set of themes.

ParticipantYugoboy, where did you find this? I would love to credit it when I steal for my Facebook!
No, wait, found it! AWESOME!

ParticipantThe funny thing is (funny “peculiar” not funny “ha ha”) is the double button solution is EXACTLY what some people asked for back in the day. There were protracted discussions (and I mean DAYS long) where Photoshoppers bickered over a quick and dirty Huffer Shop (this was in the days before Lootie vomited onto the landscape) beat out a work of art. A couple of Photoshoppers even lobbied Drew personally at Fark Parties for the change. The second the change happened EVERYONE hated it.
I wonder if Drew just quietly thumped his head against the wall for a while?
In the end, voting isn’t about the work you put into it, just what seems to be tickling the Farker’s fancy in that particular thread. There is a lesson in this somewhere, but I am basically to lazy to suss it out.

ParticipantI have no inspiration, instant or otherwise and since this is not an archive diveable theme looks like I’m out this week. Legos is not looking promising either. My grandson took all his legos home last summer and I doubt I will get them back in time. Oh well, I was due for a break anyway!
I am definitely out for next week, unless I just happen to go to the Lego Store by Rockefeller Center…which I doubt. Just as well, I’ve got to finish Curves and process for Lomo. Will be first theme in ages I haven’t shot anything for…but I can live.

ParticipantBeing sick for 2 days really put the kabosh on this one for me. I only have one that completely fits the theme of opening the book at random and using that as an inspiration point. So yeah…phoning it in tonight–looking forward to what the rest of you will have.
I decided the second I saw this theme that I would do EXACTLY as instructed…it saved ever so much stress! Will I be brutalized in the voting? Yup! But at least I had fun!
ennuipoet
ParticipantI’m voting communist. We total the votes of a given theme, then divvy them up to person by number of submissions they had. This way, nobody gets hurt, and it doesn’t matter how hard or how little you work at your photos. Whaddayasay? 😉
/Voted to bring back the 1-vote.
I’d like to suggest that we become a anarcho-syndicalist commune. Where we take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week, and all the decision of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting.
You’re fooling yourself! We live in a Dictatorship!

ParticipantOh god, ennuipoet that sucks!!! I hope things get resolved quickly.
I feel weird posting this insubstantial crap after that, but did want to let everyone know there’s a poll in the Pub and Grill Forum regarding the Fark voting options. The powers that be are looking at the issue and want your feedback, so please vote there or in the Fark Farktography Forum (or both). Poll here is available at http://www.farktography.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&p=52608#52608
It’s not me Elsinore, it’s Lokisbong! (I screwed up the quote brackets in my reply) I am not currently in danger of going to jail…at least as far as I know!
