So, I am doing a little research on the ole Wikipedia looking for ideas and I am now compelled to ask: the idea of this theme is Hard Infrastructure, correct?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrastructure#.22Hard.22_versus_.22soft.22_infrastructure

Roads, railroads, power lines, aqueducts, that sort of thing are the intended subjects rather than government buildings or banks, that sort of thing?

Just in case you need to know what an “O Face” might look like:
    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=O+FACE

When I click the link it’s blocked. Reason: “Tasteless”

I will not dispute the lack of taste throughout Urban Dictionary.

Here is another questionably tasteful, yet less blockable link

I would like to urge each and every one of us to devote an entry in this contest to showing us your “O Face”. Say nothing about it in the actual thread, just post the shot. Then wait and see if Fark get’s what we’re on about! 8)

so if i park outside Kessler AFB and take pictures of the planes it should be ok, right?

Speaking as a former USAF cop, I can tell you that you may legally photography any aircraft in flight from public space. No police officer, military member or private security may legally prevent you from engaging in this activity.

None of this means they will not attempt to do exactly that.

I would check around locally to see if there is a location where photographers usually photograph, if the base is used to seeing people there then you shouldn’t be hassled. A phone call to Public Affairs MIGHT help, but unless things are dramatically different than in my day that information is usually not passed on.

Sounds like the internet is almost full…

Ah, but surely there is room just one little file…it is only wafer thin!

For those of you who aren’t facebook friends – check this shiat out. I copied my last status about the $3000 musky I caught today. 🙁

I went fishing today and, as usual, I had my camera and tripod in the boat. When the fish aren?t biting I?ll take photos. When the big fish bite, I take a photo of me holding it before release. I caught this guy today at Banner Marsh. With the fish in the net (still in the water) I set up my camera and tripod on the front seat. The, using the self timer, I took a pic of me and the fish sitting on the back seat. After the first one, I rushed forward and pushed the button for just one more pic. As I sort of ran to the back of the boat I heard a ?SPLASH? and got a sick feeling in my stomach. I turned and my camera was GONE. Just like in the movies, there were ripples and some bubbles where it went in. I must have rocked the boat enough and it just fell into the lake.

    I said, ?Oh f*ck!?.

I immediately released the fish (he did OK and slowly swam away) and sort of dug around with my net. No luck. I then stripped down and jumped in! I spent the next 20 minutes chest deep in weedy lake water holding onto the side of my boat ? feeling around with my toes. Nothing.

    Banner Marsh – 1, Ulle ? 0.

If you want to price check, it was a Canon 7D, EF-S 17-55 F/2.8 lens, 16 Gig Extreme IV CF card and a UV haze lens filter. Oh yeah, and a Manfrotto 725B tripod.

I can’t seem to stop crying…why god, why?!?

I’m trying to be charitable and think of ANY reason for using the OCF as a Fill Light, but I just can’t. A few weeks ago I was down on the East River shooting some night shots of the skyline as the Sun set. I’m a tripod, shooting long exposure well away from anyone else. Suddenly, these three girls show up with their PnS and start popping flashes. I stopped for a minute to let them do their thing then lean forward and hit my shutter and they start shooting again. I turn and politely ask them not to do that because their flash interferes with my shot. One of the girls says “Oh, well we thought that we would take our pictures when you took yours so we could get the same shot, it’s really pretty.”

    Seriously.

I explained that every time their camera flashed that light went into my lens also and I didn’t want their light.

“Oh, we didn’t know it did that”

They were nice about it and I tried really hard not to be a dick. Truth be told their flash wasn’t even noticeable in the shot, but there is a principle involved. Secondly, WTF, you wanted my shots? Really, would you walk up to a musician, lean over their shoulder and start copying their musical notation because the song was really pretty and you wanted to play it too?

Or, and this might just be crazy talk, you could check you local police dept’s rules on issuing press passes. Here in NYC bloggers can be issued Freelance Press Passes. The real thing is so much better! 🙂

Bottom line: get a video camera if you want to make movies.

Seconded! I decided against buying a 60D because I didn’t want video on my DSLR. Personally, I feel the trend toward multifunction devices results in at least one of the functions being sacrificed. It’s fine if my phone has a universal remote, magic fingers massage, bottle opener and wireless Nucleus accumbens stimulator, I would like my DSLR to just take stills.

Not that I wouldn’t take a 5D if someone walked up and said “Here, take this”.

Ennuipoet, I thought your comment about my crater photo in the contest was great. I thought about replying with “Yeah, context is important when using the words ‘rim’ and ‘plug'” but I didn’t want to get smacked for threadjacking. 🙂 So I’ll note here that yeah that’s pretty much what I thought when I stumbled upon that sign last weekend. I would have laughed except I was winded from hiking a very loose gravel path up the side of the crater.

😀 I thought if I just went ahead and made the comment before the thread went live we could avoid the fifty posts observing the double entendre in the shot!

Sounds like you should be out with the camera looking for open windows!

If you’d seen my neighbors you wouldn’t think that. 🙄

Good god, it has taken me two hours to finally get some uploads through for tonight! Either my ISP is throttling my upspeed (down seems fine!) or everyone in West Harlem is streaming hard core porn vids to the Interwebs!

Rav…for you own safety do NOT go a safari to Africa! Confusion about large predators is invariably fatal! 🙂

Which reminds me. Read about this a few months back in either American Photo or Outdoor Photographer:

Those were amazing! I really have to learn how to build things.

Good god, I really have to try some of this HDR stuff soon–a little scared of “the HDR hole” though 😉

Can I ask what kind of filesize the final stitched image came out at, ennuipoet?

The Tiff came out about 100 MB with the pixels being 5857×2403.
