There’s a Bilbo Baggins quote somewhere in there….
Damn those hobbits and their folksy wisdom.

Anyway, that raises a pretty key point. I mean, I go off somewhere–anywhere–and I usually take a camera with me, but I wouldn’t define that as travel photography.

Because with a loose definition, pretty much anything goes.

*if this post makes no sense, I apologise. I should have gone to bed 5 hours ago.

I get your point. I mean I travel a lot of places in the City, and I always have my camera. I am kind of giving myself the limitation that I went to someplace specifically to take photos not just because I was going there anyway. For simplicity sake we should probably give some sort of guideline, like the City limits, or at least Zip Code.

ennuipoet you have almost 5000 images in that photostream. and i didn’t see any sets of collections. so how do you manage to find older stuff? or do you just not bother?

As NoBigDeal noted I keep sets, almost compulsively. I use Flickr as kind of an online backup so if a major disaster happens I still have what I consider the best of what I shoot. I usually upload at full size jpeg so I have something to restore from. Offline I use Lightroom* where I tag, and keep them in sets according to year/event/description. I can usually find a particular image in a minute or so.

    *Lightroom cost a tidy fortune…someday I will–ahem–buy a copy.

In the immortal words of Buckaroo Banzai, “Where ever you go, there you are” so travel could be construed loosely? So, when we say travel photography is there a mileage limit or a geographic boundary? What I am saying is, these days, traveling to another Borough is a big endeavor and constitutes a “trip”.

Hey, I don’t get out of the City much!

Just back from finishing shooting for this week…it will take me the rest of the week to get that smell out of my gear!

Thankfully, this is a Fall thread!

Ennuipoet‘s operation shot also really caught my eye. He managed a great photo, under challenging circumstances – not to mention some heavy sedation. Glad all is well now.

😀 Thanks! When the doctors noticed me shooting her immediate response was “Don’t take my picture, I look fat in this gown!” We keep our sense of humor when we’re hip deep in blood. Here is a “B” Side which was my original submission but was cut due to the blood

If you don’t like blood, then I wouldn’t click that!

I’ve never shot large format but living where I live, I see people working with it quite a bit. The best advice I can give is be prepared to work slowly, have Kestrana there to shoo people out of the way* while you work and invest in a back brace. I watched a guy a week or so ago shooting large format at a parade of all things, he would pick his rig up to move it…it looked painful.

*Like me who stood there gawking at the guy, trying to get a peak at his rig.

I concur about the backgrounds, it is easy to get tunnel visioned and concentrate on your foreground and miss elements being cut off. I do it all the time and it drives me nuts. I really liked the lighting in the berry shots, you caught the light and kept the detail in the shadows. Not always easy to do.

    Hahahaha. Could have.

They’ve got that sign in the bathroom telling people the candy in the urinal isn’t for them!!

On an unrelated note: Seriously, a Little Debbie and cup of coffee made double digit votes? The pic was utterly uninspired, I expected two votes–mine and sympathy.

I’m guess people just really like Little Debbies. 😕

All three of my entries were done between 6:30-7:30 last night. Before then, I was busy driving around and realizing that every hardware and industrial supply store in southeast connecticut doesn’t carry the big plastic-encased urinal cakes.

“Excuse me, do you carry Urinal cakes, I am really late and I promised to bring the cake!”

    It’s how I imagine this…

They don’t have to be still lifes ennuipoet

    /Right?

Well, one of mine (the only one I like) isn’t but I simply procrastinated searching out subjects and went with a couple of still lifes.

If it makes anyone feel better, I am so not happy with anything I am submitting tonight. I really don’t have a feel for still life. I know, I should work on it in contest like this but the arranging, the tweaking the lights, all when I could be outside playing.

Thank you all. I will just say that I have written a few book proposals from time to time. It is much easier when you already have the interest of the publisher 😀 It is also easier to write about something one is passionate about, and Fark, Farktography and the Book are things I am pretty passionate about!

“Farktography is not a book about photography, nor is it a book about the Internet, it is a book about how we use the Internet to speak about what is meaningful to us as people. Some of the photographers are professionals, most are just hobbyist who like to share their joy and passion with the world around them. Fark provides a virtual, ever changing gallery for the contributors and viewers to stroll through, exposing both sides to art, humor, family and society unfettered by the prism of contemporary fads and fashions maintained by an academy of self titled elites who dominate the art photography web world.

The readers of Farktography can turn the pages of this book and see themselves, their family and friends enshrined in these pages. The readers can see that beauty is not the sole province of the professional photographer with huge investments in specialized equipment and training, it is there for all to capture and display. A reader does not need to know what Fark is anymore than they need to know the difference between and f-stop and ISO setting. All the reader will see is themselves reflected back from the pages.

Farktography is not a book about photography or about the Internet, it is a book about how we use both of these mediums, the true marriage of media and user created content in the 21st Century. It is what we all hoped the Internet would be when first saw the flickers on our screens and dream it remains into the future”
