ennuipoet, I think I mentioned it in the original theme thread, but the basic concept was borne out of something Kat and do on a pretty regular basis. We call them ‘photo safaris’, and basically pick someplace and just go wander around and see what there is to photograph. Old Sacramento is one of our favorites, because there’s always just a hodgepodge of people and things to keep us clicking. Sometimes we’ll pick a place that might have something for a Farktography contest, or an idea for a shot one of us wants to get, but either way, the idea is to get out with the camera and use it. We try and do that at least once or twice a month.

Again, this is pretty much what I do all the time. I’ve got spots I hit on a regular basis, going back to one in the morning (weather providing). Ever since I picked up the camera again this has been my M.O. Not to get all gushy, but photography changed my life. I was rapidly transforming into a housebound hermit until I started shooting, now I am out every weekend and a good many week days just wandering, shooting pics and (incidentally) excercising! 😯

Yeah we are actually not hiring a photographer. Considering how many cameras we own, we might even be able to lend one to every single guest without a camera.

“Here Gramma, this peanut can is actually a pinhole camera. Just tug on this to take a picture and then advance the film by turning this piece of pencil stuck in the back”

That elicited a genuine laugh out loud moment as the mental image of grandma staring in confusion at the peanut can sprang full blossom in my mind!

I just wanted you all to know that I injured myself in pursuit of this weeks theme…you all will be hearing from my lawyers, except for orionid, because he just got married and all of his money is now kestrana‘s. The rest of you, I’m suing for making me fall down the hill and twist my ankle!

You guys are in big trouble.

ennuipoet and lokisbong did you submit those or did the folks who used them just find them? and if they found them did they ask permission?

Mine was picked out by the feature editor for the blog. I post most of my pics on Flickr with a Creative Common’s license Share and Share with attribution, non-commercial. The blog linked back to my Flickr.

This thread actually brings up a question I was thinking about. After reading a few articles last night about crowd sourcing and editors doing exactly what we are talking about, using amateur work for free instead of using pro stock, are we shooting ourselves in the foot by giving away our work like this? I really don’t think I will ever make a living via photography, but I know that I can make a little money here and there, but not if my stuff goes for free all the time.

Thoughts? Are we giving away what we should be selling? Are we taking food out of the mouths of pros by giving away our stuff like this?

Very cool for both of you. I actually know what you mean. I have a picture that is on a travel website for northern California.
    http://www.discovernortherncalifornia.com/del-norte-county-california-attractions.html
its the harbor picture. I was almost jumping up and down from joy when she asked to use my picture.

Thanks! I got a little thrill of my own looking at the page when I saw Fort Bragg on there. When I lived in NorCal Fort Bragg was my “I gotta get outta here to someplace quiet” town. Of all the places I’ve been, I could see living out my golden years there!

I always get a thrill when my stuff get’s picked up, even online. Yesterday the Wall Street Journal’s Metropolis section ran one of my shots

and I was giddy all day.

Since I use Flickr, I generally tag any Farktography entries with farktography so I know I used them already. Unfortunately, I’ve gotten really lazy about tagging this year, so I haven’t been doing that lately, but it definitely made it easier for me to find my previously used entries.

I do that and I reduce and compress my entries for Fark links and keep them in a set. I’ve had to go in a check a few times, but the system works pretty well.

Soosh: The first thing I said when I saw your first entry was “HEY! No HDR!” Then I read below. Awesome shot!

I’m also having a hard time deciding on this one. Should they be scenic types of shots like landscapes, skylines, etc., or could it be things you see while you’re there, i.e., some critter in a zoo?

I really wrestled with this issue as well. To be blunt, in my traveling days I didn’t photograph the sites, I took photos of the people I met there. Those Roman ruins have been there two thousand years, the people I drank beer with in the pub next to them won’t. All of my shots this week are of the people at the places not the places.

Are the non-Nikkor brands (Sigma and Tamron) comparable in quality?

I was looking at the Nikon 85mm and the Nikon 105mm, but had to compromise… so I ended up with the Tamron 90mm f/2.8.

    Love it.

The most recent model of the Tamron 90mm has a built-in AF motor, too, so it’ll work on any Nikon DSLR.

I’ve the Tamron 90mm on a older Canon mount, I’ve not done any portrait work with it but I am impressed with the Macro. The AF focus is slow as Christmas, but since I use manual for macro that is a non-issue.

Wow, I should pull my two other pix, since they have no votes. some people (like all of them, apparently) have no sense of humor. At least people started voting for olav’s fish-slap picture…

Yeah, wow, I took a beating this week. I knew I wouldn’t win with what I have but I thought I would do better for thinking outside the box. On the other hand, I am the first to admit my pics were…disturbing. The one of all the little fish staring up at you, even I am freaked out by it.

Looks like some folks don’t quite get the rules. A picture of abe vigoda is Fark-ish, but not kosher.

I REALLY tried to brain up a way to use Abe Vigoda this week. I went so far as to search the intrahwebs to see if there were such a thing as an Abe Vigoda doll.

The nice thing about this thread is basically ALL of my photography falls into this category!
