ParticipantIs it too late to submit our short biographies? If not, would it be possible to see a couple for examples? I’m not sure what we should include in it.

ParticipantI’d also like to see true place rankings, with ties for the same number of votes and no skipping places.
Heathen!
😆 It’s not the first time I’ve been called that, nor will it be the last!
But, at least I have the almighty Elsinore on my side to tip a beer with, so at least I’m not a lonely and sober Heathen.

ParticipantI’d vote for the Conservation one and the Flashes of Hope sounds good too. Kestrana’s points are all well made and I’ll be happy with whatever is chosen.

ParticipantOk, I do respect my elders!
Holy crap, you really must be 50+.
😆
Sonny, in my day, we only had ONE type of stapler and none of those fancy sizes and colors!
It really hit me when I took my grandson to IHOP for breakfast and thought ‘crap, in a few days I’ll qualify for the 55+ senior discount’.

Participant1- Hey Kashari – these made me think of you – http://photo.net/photodb/member-photos?photo_id=11769932
Wow, those are awesome, thanks for the link U-Man! I wish I had more frequent access to horses out in scenic places. Or, even better, that I had my own again…Kashari was the name of my Appaloosa I had when I was younger.
btw…I LOVED your kitty pics that you linked. What did you use as your background, do you have a studio setup kind of thing?

Participantwhile some contests do indeed have a tie for second and then a third place award that person is actually forth. 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd which makes what we do more accurate IMO. it’s the forth highest vote total.
besides i’m older than you so i must be right 🙂

ParticipantJust out of curiosity, what sports have rankings where they skip places? I don’t pay much attention to that kind of stuff, but assumed they used normal/sequential ‘1,2,3….’ rankings.
Golf, which I’d say is a similar setup for the competition where everyone competes against everyone else at once.
Likewise, in a hypothetical AFC North where the Steelers and Ravens are both 8-3, and, the Browns are 4-7 and the Bengals are 2-9, then the Steelers and Ravens are tied for first, the Browns are third, and the Bengals fourth.
Ok, well in my 50+ years on this planet, I’ve never heard of ranking anything this way. It’s no wonder I preferred to hang out with the freaks instead of the jocks in school, at least we knew how to count how many joints we had left. 😈
But seriously, it’s not like I come close to winning often enough to worry about this, but I’m trying to understand the non-logic here. So how would you place people in a photography contest where you award ribbons for 1st, 2nd & 3rd. Don’t most of them award each place without skipping, even if they have ties for one place?
Anyway, y’all can keep using your ‘new math’ and I’ll keep my rankings correctly, the way they should be! 😆

ParticipantRe: the averaging and participation stats, I forgot all categories weren’t penalized, so here’s a Roseanna “neevermiiiind” from me.
Back to the rankings, so using the current method, if you were to award actual ribbons to 1st, 2nd & 3rd places, how would you do that using our previous example? Or would rules be changed to where you couldn’t have a tie (no idea how you’d do that, but…)?

I also wasn’t thinking the new program would replace the awesome FSM, but just as another number cruncher game for us.
kashari
ParticipantWow, you guys are making my need for sequential order go crazy! 😆
So in your example; if you, with 8 votes, are in fifth place, then who is in 2nd, 3rd & 4th? The ‘9ers’ are all in 1st place with their number of votes. You have the next number, which makes you SECOND! It shouldn’t matter how many people tie, YOU CAN’T JUST SKIP NUMBERS, dammit! And who cares what sports guys do, they’re just a bunch of dumb jocks who obviously don’t know how to count! 😡
1,2,3,4,5
not
1,5
At least Elsinore knows proper order… 😉
FSM can keep its ranking system but maybe do this one the other way, then at least they’re not exactly the same?

ParticipantI also would like to see it where you don’t get penalized when you miss a contest. I know it’s to encourage participation, but sometimes life just gets in the way.

ParticipantDoes ‘racking’ your zoom lens during a long exposure count?

ParticipantI agree with Choc and while the beach shot is lovely, I think it looks way too processed for what I understood we could use in Farktography.
I’ve never done any HDR nor do I know what tone-mapping equates to in the Capture NX2 world, but that picture looks like what I think of as HDR. Since we’re allowed to do Curves adjustments, I guess it’s kind of hard to say how much of that is allowed though.

ParticipantSo if you’re submitting 3 shots, do they all need to be taken with the same lens or focal length?
That wasn’t my intention, but please see this note from the original thread:
Well, I didn’t want to suggest a bunch of rules that would wind up being completely unenforceable, but the idea was to encourage people to go out and shoot with only a single focal length available to them, not “images that happened to be shot with a prime lens”, if that makes sense.
Derrrr, now I remember reading that before when I voted for it, thanks! I didn’t even think about going back to read the original threads as the new themes come up. 😳

ParticipantOMG Kestrana, those colors in your flower shot are gorgeous! I’ve never seen one like it, do you know what kind of flower that is?
Unfortunately no. I’ve looked on the Central Park flower website and several tropical websites. Found some other pictures of the same flower on Flickr with such helpful names as “Blue Flower”.
After some Googling I think it could be something called Tibouchina urvilleana. The unusual hook shaped stamens are what made the connection for me.
Thanks, what a cool flower!
