ParticipantI think this was meant to be actual lo-fi shooting, even if it’s using a disposable camera’s lens on a digital camera. Or a pinhole, which wouldn’t be difficult to rig for any camera.
Well, maybe it won’t be difficult for you tinkerers, but the first thing I looked at about how to make a pinhole lens said you could use a body cap, but need a drill. Sharp, motorized devices and I do not get along. 😆
Nor would I have any idea how to take a lens off a disposable and put it on my camera. Is this stuff that everyone knows how to do but me? 😳

ParticipantJust to clarify and avoid embarrassing myself, is the requirement for this theme that we talk to strangers and ask them to take a photo up close? Or just to take photos of strangers up close? I’ve got shots from street festivals, protests, etc… but I generally didn’t wind up talking to the people in the photos.
It’s a personal choice – I like to explain to most of the people that I’m doing it for a photo project, and if I get a good shot I’m willing to exchange e-mails so I can send them the edited photo after. If I just happen to capture someone in passing though, I won’t bother approaching them. It’s not necessary, but it’s nice.
/Also, found out yesterday that UK laws allow me to take photos of complete strangers and give me rights to publish them and even make money off them without a model release. WTF? I mean, nice for me as a photographer, but that sort of sucks for everyone else (not that I’m going to be selling these photos anytime soon).
I think the dividing line is if you’ll be using an individual’s image to promote a commercial product, then you need a release.
Most publishers will require one be sent or say that you need to have one on-hand, just in case. Even if they’re recognizable (in a public setting), technically I don’t think you need a release even to sell prints or whatever. If you’re going to use a pic you took of Joe Blow in an Ad to say your mama’s restaurant serves the best pie in town, then you need one.

ParticipantIn the end, breaking out of your comfort zone is really hard in street photography. What I have learned is that 90% of the people don’t even know you’ve taken their photo unless you get right in their face to do it. I’ve been working at lot on shooting from the hip, carrying my camera by my side and shooting up, down and to the side as I walk past. I am starting to get better results after some months of practice.
Most of my shots, however, are by going to places where people know and don’t care about photographers. Parades of any stripe are rich meat for street photography and not the performers either, but the spectators.
Yeah, now I wouldn’t feel as creepy about it at an event type of thing where people expect pictures to be taken, yours of the parade(?) are really good. But, just shooting people going about their day isn’t for me.
I like to be ‘invisible’ when out & about and if someone takes a pic without asking, that would really bother me. I also think people should be told if it’s going to be used online or in any other public type of display.

ParticipantI feel like ennuipoet on this one. Unless I can come up with some brilliant ideas (or even mediocre ones) that I can execute, I’m out.
This contest does not play to my strengths (even less that “Strange”).
Yeah, me too. I’d be mortified to learn that someone took my picture and put it online in a contest (I also hate when family posts one on Facebook too…), so I can’t do that to others. The few times I have taken pictures of strangers, it’s been from afar and I still felt anxious about it.
I don’t have the creative gene for setting up cool/funny sets either, but will certainly enjoy seeing what others come up with.

Participantorionid I LOVE your Zen shot, did you set that up or where was it? It’s such nice lighting and really has a soothing feeling to it.
It was a window display in Las Vegas. I don’t remember where though. If you look closely, you can see reflections of slot machines off the glass on the right hand side.
Ah, ok, I couldn’t tell what was back there, it is a nice display tho! 🙂

As for the watermarking, those are pretty obtrusive, but if they’re for sale or published, I can understand given the occasional ‘right-click, saved..ohhh, it’s my new background’, etc.. I think they’re still kinda too big for here though….
Awesome stuff again this week, y’all rock! (ughhh)

Participant// I’ve tried to remove my avatar since that eye was creeping even me out, let’s see if it works…
…. nope.
😆 Oh, don’t do it because of what I said, it’s funny along with being weird.

Nice! I especially like the first horse one & the last of your daughter. Holy smokes, such a cutie! (kinda weird to see the creepy baby head and then her…) 😆

ParticipantThank you Elsinore. I’ve bought two new cameras in the last eight months so figured I’d best get some use out of them both. Not a lot of good SOOC’s during tonight’s jaunt around town, but hopefully a few I can use in the future.
Welcome to the forums, Barracuda! Your avi is cweepy but your entries are not, nice job!

ParticipantI would like Linguine’s “A Day Of Protest” removed, because it is a blatant copy of one of my images, just underexposed to the point that you can’t really tell. Protect my copyright!
👿 😆
😆
Orionid That My Little Puking Pony is an awesome shot, whether it’s in
for this contest or not.eta: nevermind, I hadn’t refreshed the page & now see it was changed…derrrr
So many beautiful shots again, nice work, Farkers!

Participantlinguine and kashari, setting the sharpness before you take the pic is fine, adjusting sharpness during resizing is not cool for this one.
I tried doing a search about this PIPA stuff, but all I found was a bunch of sites devoted to some british lady’s posterior 😉
Ok, thanks.
Looks like the SOPAPIPAPILLA sponsors are starting to drop:

ParticipantAnyone want a mod to post a totally black (or white, to match Fark) photo (with voting enabled) in solidarity?
Sounds good to me. Now that I’ve read up a little more on the status, I guess it’s not as dead as I thought. This link from the Main Page is a good summary:

ParticipantI’m confused too on this SOPA thing. I read yesterday that the sponsoring Representative had withdrawn it? I also hadn’t thought about how it might affect the contest,

ParticipantAs for the in-camera RAW processing, are our default shooting settings kosher, like if contrast or sharpening is bumped +1? I’m taking this to mean no tweaking afterwards, is that right?
