ParticipantYeah I just submitted a couple to each category. But what a long time to take entries – from now to Dec. 1st yikes!

ParticipantStart local. No Big Deal photographs local bands on the rock/metal scene and Caradoc has a gig with a local theatre, for example. Entering contests might not win you any money to start but it can get you a little recognition.
But in orionid‘s case, he was approached by the organizations which found his photos on Flickr. Focus paid him, Oregon Humanities, being a non-profit, did not.

Participantside question – I’m using flickr to host my images, and when I tried to post the first upload of one of my pictures (this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilpadrino03/5575932758/ ), I couldn’t post on the fark thread because it was too large. I then resized it on photoshop, posted it again, and it still wouldn’t post to the size I wanted – I had to downgrade it (from medium-large to just medium).
My question is – how do you get the large-sized pictures posted, like U-man’s “Three Smashed Girls.” or Kestrana’s “Chihuly Glass Walkway”? Do you just sacrifice image quality to increase the size? I feel the bottle’s smashing into dust is lost on a smaller scale in my picture.
Also FLickr has a strange quirk of increasing the file size for the “other than original sizes” – meaning if you upload a 640 x whatever pixel photo, the “large 640 pixel” size on Flickr is actually a much larger file size than the original photo even though they are the same dimensions. So if you upload at 640, make sure you use original size. That’s what I had to do for my first picture this week but the link I provided popped to the original picture in my photostream which is full size. I use Adobe’s “save for web” option which allows me to look at the picture and chose my file quality to a certain extent while staying below 150K.

ParticipantMay have to get one of those before we (ugh) have to fly in May. I don’t like letting any of my gear out of my sight when I travel…
.Us neither. All our carry-ons were our camera gear and 2 books.
Where are you going?

Participant“current world languages”? That would disqualify heiroglyphs, archaic and non-standard languages but allow for things like Arabic, Cyrillic, Asian character languages and sign languages. I think 99% of the entries would be Latin alphabet anyway even without the distinction.
You could also go with “letters of an alphabet you are fluent in.” Fortunately Klingon uses the Latin alphabet so all the cellar-dwellers wouldn’t be excluded and aside from the odd Egyptologist who suddenly joins farktography, eliminate most of the other things.

ParticipantWould your best/close friends count as family? Otherwise you’re getting 3 pictures of orionid and/or the Fauxcat because I don’t have any contest worthy pictures of any other family members, nor do I live within 500 miles of any of them.

ParticipantI started out using Photobucket Pro and eventually switched to Flickr pro for a couple reasons. First the community is definitely better, more involved, active and actual photography driven whereas Photobucket felt like the MySpace of photo hosting sites. In many ways Flickr has better tools for organizing your photos, runs faster as a site and has a better internal editor than Photobucket.
On the other hand, Flickr can be like Facebook in that they modify, remove and add features seemingly at random and the changes haven’t always been positive. There have been a small number of instances (mostly at the time they’ve done site modifications) where their hosting dropped Farktography pictures, and that never happened to me using Photobucket. But overall, I’m happier using Flickr.

ParticipantIs it bad that “Also Sprach Zarathustra” popped into my head?

ParticipantI’d tend to shy away from that sort of picture – after all the same beading effect could happen on metal or plastic.

ParticipantAlso some of you like No Big Deal , soosh, Elsinore owe me forms still…

ParticipantUpdated layout: still need to drop photos that we havent made contacts with and some that people requested dropped, fix the frame on one photo but otherwise should be current
