orionid – While not as bummed as you are, I’m bummed that you couldn’t make that work…yet.

I certainly enjoyed your message, rav. I was smiling through much of it.

But to answer your question — IMO the beer will play better. For the memorabilia to work, you would need to tell the story. And not enough of the Fark crowd is going to read the story. (plus, you’d be selling words, not pics)

Incidently; has anyone checked for the settings they are using? My scanner has a ‘photo’ setting where I get squat for depth of field. Using ‘Document’, I get the better range. Ya’ll might want to check, though I dunno why ‘document’ enhances DOF; perhaps because one may be scanning a book with a seam or some such.

And I’ve now screwed myself. I have some 6 or 7 images that I simply *must* use. I need a doppleganger me so I can post them all. The decision process is going to wrack me hard.

NOW you tell me. I could have used some DoF this afternoon.

And I have four. Zero – are you gonna go with the Andy Warhol? I think I’ll give Mopsy a holler to see if she’ll help decide. (but she’s competitive enough that she just might fib)

And actually, I just had an epiphany of a possible epic scan idea. Just need to make it work…

Got three good enufs right now though.

I don’t think anyone needs any ideas for this one (it was a fun one, eh?), but just in case here’s one that I liked but didn’t use, free for the taking. (I liked it but came up with others that didn’t require a trip to the store to execute.)

The idea is to take 4 different colors of cellophane, saran wrap, or as my wife suggested the clear covers they sell for kids’ book reports, and divide the glass of your scanner into quadrants. Lay a Campbell’s soup can in the center of each quadrant, et voila – your own personal Andy Warhol.

Since I didn’t actually try to execute it, the only problem I see is whether the cellophane would show up well enough. It may require holding the scanner cover over it to get a white reflection. (And whether the voters would like it was another question, but that’s not exactly specific to this idea ;))

Well, well, well. I did this shot about two weeks ago. It was intended to be my sleeper. Now it’ll look like a copier. :[

I didn’t use plastic wrap though. I used a different colored plastic. Plus I did…something else. With my HP 5 mm DoF it didn’t turn out great. But I’m using it. Zero, you’ll probably get posted first ’cause my wife scheduled some river-boat dinner-cruise thing with friends tomorrow evening. Grumble, grumble

Okay, so I gave in, sucked it up, and bought a damned brand new scanner. It has a depth of field of about 1.5″ from the surface up, which isn’t great, but is enough to do some 3-d object scanning.

I’ve been playing for a few hours now, and before I go too far–is it within the theme to do some artsy-fartsy type shots? In particular, does/do this/these three dimentional object/s have to be stationery? (stationary? too lazy to look it up.)

    I’m proud of you.

I’d say that scanning something moving or moving the scanner is half the fun.

But I’ll bet that my stationary shot gets more votes…

Oh yeah. Using the scanner got me to scan some of my awesome/awful mullet photos from college. I looked like an idiot. I’ll have to share them on Facebook one of these days.

    This is really fun.

This does not bode well if anyone was hoping to take first place … or second, or third 😉

And this is different from other contests how?

Thanks again. But as I sit at an average 9 votes and 73rd place for urban art, I’ll point out that you picked a bad week for your statement. 🙂

That said, I’m getting happier with my scanner pics. 😯 Two done, one idea to try and make happen.

Maaan. Not funny. My ‘C’ drive is crapping out. (Yes, I have all important files off of it. Yes, my photos are backed up to multiple drives. I even have a 2T drive in my desk at work that gets intermittently updated in case of a house disaster.) I came home tonight and opened multiple things for on-call work stuff, e-mail, imagehost, scratchpad…and my computer locked up. Then it would turn on but the monitors remained blank. After multiple attempts, it started up — and my fark fonts and layout were all jacked up. My head was spinning because it didn’t make sense.

    Now it does. Whew.

Elsinore, I’ll bet you are a lady in the ballroom. I’ll just leave it at that.

Here are some other versions/bees –

ravnostic, can’t you borrow someone’s, or use a work scanner on your break? That would suck if you can’t play. Looking forward to see what people come up with for this one.

Heh. Thanks. But so far I’ve got two that are in the ‘good enough’ category and one more idea to try tonight. I’m hoping for a top 10 but not really a 1st.

Yeah, c’mon rav. At least flip the bird on an office scanner. Or find a friend with a scanner/printer/copier combo.

As I sit out the downpour, I remembered this guy. Would another version of this be in the theme spirit?

    🙂 Thanks.

The paper is cheaper than I expected – http://www.pictureline.com/superior-arctic-white-107-x12-yds-seamless-background-paper-93.html?___store=default
The lights…aren’t cheap. I tried using lamps with different bulbs without success. Everything was yellow-ish and it didn’t play nice with a white flash for fill. Maybe somebody knows how to do it without much $. But I don’t.

Thanks folks. I got zip for the next two themes. Plus I’m on-call this week so I’ll be at work on Sat and Sun. I don’t think I’ll be archive diving for the scanner theme. 🙂

Rav – I agree. Maisy on white background is my fav.

Thanks. A co-worker told me about it. Somebody used puffy stick-on letters. 🙂
