Can’t I just archive dive for this one? Do I really need to take the car out and drive down the El Camino Real until I get to la igelsia de San Isidro? I’ve got lots of shots of Spain, and the place where Mother Theresa got her calling from God. I mean once you’ve seen one San Franciscan style church, you’ve seen them all…

Some weird stuff would have to go down for me to go there. I’m not even a radio astronomer.

Exactly 😀 It was either there or VLA, and I figured VLA would have better skies than the Puerto Rican sauna.

I’m close to the VLA. It’s only about 4 or 5 hours drive from my house. Even just outside of Socorro is the starriest place I’ve seen this side of Afghanistan.

On the other end of brightness, if I wanted to shoot the sun, I’d pull out a shade 10 welding filter.

Ok, here’s what I don’t understand. In all the other threads, voting is enabled for everything, so why is the default for Farktography voting-disabled?

Also, I liked the single choice voting better. As it is, I don’t vote for “best”. I vote for “good enough”. I’m very liberal with my votes.

And what’s up with a credit check for internet service?

Would you sell crack to someone you knew couldn’t pay for their habit? 😉

If you find you need an OBO tomorrow, just PM me the details and I’ll get ’em posted for you.

I wouldn’t sell crack to someone without cash up front, and likewise the internet service is billed in advance, and unlikewise internet service can be cut off with the push off a button while crack is cash and carry.

Back on subject, (complements of university wi-fi) this week’s entries are great, both in concepts and executions. I may have spoke too soon about cleaning up. I will say that I think my ideas stand apart from most, as my competitions are of a relatively friendly nature.

And, I’m ready for the upcoming food theme.

Hardware: Um… I haven’t been “camping” since around 1994. My current HP laptop was bought at an chain office supply store as the display model. I could assemble one from parts, but part selection then become the difficulty. The last time I stuck a chip in a slot it was an 8087 (8 MHz).

Software: This is one of the things I dislike about the current state of affairs of computing: the incessant automatic upgrades. For two reasons: 1. While my hardware remains the same, why would I need new software or be capable of running new software, 2. It allows coders to be lazy and put out buggy code. Anyway, I’m really not very software invested. MS Office is the only thing I’ve spent money on. I’ve been sticking with free software for imagery manipulation so far. What’s this Photo Shop thing I keep hearing about? From that little company that makes Page Maker? It that really necessary, and which version? Buy or lease?

Plugs, ports, peripherals: USB, SDHC, CF, SCSI, WTF? How do I do all this DIY? Are the part of the case, are there plug in modules, wtf? I’m good on selecting my own mouse and keyboard, and I just picked up a new (low-end) Canon inkjet (is Nikon ever going to “close the loop” on digital? 🙂 ). I was thinking more exotic peripherals like a tablet.

Storage: 1TB? 3TB? Twins? Back-up capability? Blue-ray burner? 9 track tape drives (for that circa 1980 movie look)?

Monitors and video cards…? Single, twins,… three-way? Calibratable? (At least w/ CRTs all you had to do was take the case off and screw with the color channel amplifiers to calibrate.)

Last, but certainly not least: desk and chair. I like the sound of the Herman Miller Aeron chair, but I might like something with a bit more padding. I could see my self in a dual pedestal desk with overhead storage as well.

Oh mercy me. I thought this theme was one of the easier ones. Or is everyone playing dumb this week, only to school me again? After showing my collection of shots to some friends that were visiting to watch the Super Bowl, they all though I had some pretty good ideas and pics. Here’s a hint: lucha libre.

Unfortunately, I fear that my current internet will die tomorrow (payment is due, and I’m going to tell them where to stick their plan), and my new service isn’t scheduled to be installed until Friday. I may have to steal wi-fi from the university to upload tomorrow. Cricket just had to go. I ran a speed test this evening and the result was 52kb download and 160kb upload. Argh! A 56k modem would do better. So far, I’m not very happy with Century Link either. The sales rep said that 3 days was the fastest installation appointment he had seen in a while. And what’s up with a credit check for internet service?

As much difficulty that there may be in fitting old Nikon lenses to modern bodies, the Canon FD mount won’t fit on the EF bodies either. The old register distance was 42mm and the EOS is 44mm, so unless you can sink the classic 50mm f/0.95 into your body by 2 inches, you’re out of luck. Now on a 4/3s…

I thought that Canon just shipped the new 1D Mk IV. And at only $5k, it’s a steal over the street prices for the Mk III. But peculiarly, it only has 16 MP (compared w/ 21MP on the MkIII and D5MkII, or 18MP on the Rebel T2i & T3i) and an APS-H sensor (compared w/ 35mm).

Are we supposed to photograph the word? In the book? I’ll need to setup my macro rig for that. 😀

Yes, I know that vinyl electrical tape is highly affordable, however, if I’m going to hang a rather spendy dSLR body off of the back end of this contraption, I’d rather do it right the first time. By my calculations, I’m looking at up to of 5′ of PVC between the lens and body. Also, it would be nice if things lined-up from the start without needing to walk back and forth from one end to the other. If I was going to do it cheap-and-easy, I’d be looking at cardboard paper-towel rolls.

So, I’ve got a set of +1, +2, and +4 diopter lenses in 58mm diameter (poor man’s macro), and there’s a machine shop around the corner from my house. Are you with me so far, Orionid? Now I just need to see what it would cost for a 58mm thread to PVC adapter set. Anyone up for a 1000mm f/17.2 lens? Too long? Too slow? The +4 diopter should yield 250mm f/4.3 by itself.

So, if it’s *just* cars, that means no motorcycle, tractor-trailer, or armored military vehicle specific parking areas?
I was under the impression that the idea was to focus more on the lot than the cars in them, i.e. don’t lose the forest for the trees.

Well, this morning I set up and shot 3 scenes. It didn’t go well for the apples. And the resulting pie was not my finest work either. I blame the oranges for that. We did however discover that apples and oranges blend well together when making a smoothie. Maybe this week I’ll actually learn how to use the Canon DPP software. Can anyone recommend a tutorial that isn’t video? My bandwidth is rather limited currently.

Hooray! This is the first time I’ve ever won Farktography! First, I’d like to thank the Academy, and also Career and Placement Services at NMSU for roviding me with this wonderful opportunity, and finally, most importantly, I’d like to thank my model, what ever her name was.

Am I the only one with a family tradition of taking pictures of the food before a dinner party? I can easily archive dive for this one.
