ParticipantSure, the week after I finish buying all the (developing) stuff you give it away! 😀
i wasn’t sure from the list you had if that was all you needed for developing film. also if you haven’t looked at the photos there is a bulk film loader and some cassettes. maybe 10 of them. i found 7 empty bulk film cans so i must have been into it at one time. it is a money saver.

Participantthis community has given me a lot over the years and i have a chance to give a bit back. to me it’s not much different that you sharing advice with someone here. besides it helps me get some clutter out of the attic. you know, one persons trash, another’s treasure 🙂
in my life time so many have helped me without thought of reward and i try to do the same to others.

Participantlook at the bright side. with your second sale you are +$2. after that …. gravy.
well less the label costs and your time 🙂

Participanti’ll check next time i’m in home depot and/or wal-mart.

Participanti usually wait until Friday morning to vote. gives most folks a chance to get their entries in. and i don’t look at results until i’ve voted.

Participantsorry about all your troubles OTOH you certainly have a good attitude about them. i live in a town of 50,000 +/- with two hospitals and both are pretty good. fortunately i haven’t needed them but friends have. my visits have been limited to a couple of CT scans (one at each) and a stress test.
got on the VA as a 7e which means co-pays but they are reasonable. medicare won’t cover some prescriptions i need and the VA will. cut the cost to me from $500 a month to $27 a month. the local office is just doctors appointments and not hospital but very convenient. and good as far are doctors visits can be good.
a friend’s son goes to the VA in baltimore and thinks it’s great. after the mess at walter reed i was wondering since i’d heard so much good and bad about them.
anyway i’m glad your visit was good (yeah that’s a question begging use of good) and hope you recover quickly.

Participantouch. at $50 bucks each i’ll just use supplemental lighting. thanks for the suggestion though.
actually if i put some extensions on each side to move the halogen quartz lights out a ways i could probably use them. they are hot but the heat fall off is pretty quick. i have used an old super 8 quartz light on a tripod ok and it produces lots of heat.

Participantthis is the studio setup i use. got it on sale for $25. it’s roughly 25% smaller than yours if my math is right. the blue background flips over and is gray on the back. bigger lights would help but those like yours may be too hot. one advantage is that it all folds down into it’s own carrying case. has two pockets for the lights.

ParticipantEven this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj-x9ygQEGA
had forgotten that one. it’s awesome.
i have ideas but they are obvious ones.

Participantinspiration isn’t coming to me and i probably will have to archive dive for this one.

Participanti think my somewhat crappy shots took away from what i had. while the editor did ok a better shot would have helped. but i found it in the attic about 2 hours before the contest and i had other stuff to do in that time. the cameras idea again had poor setup but was a good idea. it finished 96th.
but going strictly by votes all three did better this week that what i’ve been averaging so …

ParticipantAwesome!
somehow i thought you’d like it 🙂
it is pretty cool solution to the problem.

Participanti shot two of mine today and am hoping the subject gets votes. the shots sure won’t. the last one is a scan of a 35 y/o photo of an even older fire truck. in b/w. it may do ok.
re kodachrome, i wept when i read about it. but i hadn’t shot any and put money in kodak’s jeans in years so ….

Participantit’s all in the eye. when you look at something try seeing it as a frame. or use the camera to actually frame it. move right/left/up/down. think about not only what you want to photograph but what else in in the frame. does it add or subtract from what you want to convey. do you know what you want to convey?
now FWIW my recent stuff has been shit in that regard but there are lots of good examples in each contest. think about how you might have shot something you like differently. read the rule of thirds (and other stuff on photography) but don’t feel you HAVE to follow “the rules”. does your photo tell a story? and if so how well? do people “get it” w/o you explaining. if you are shooting for mood what mood? bright usually is happy and dark sad but again it’s not cast in stone.
put on clothes you don’t care about getting dirty and get down on your knees or stomach. use a ladder to change perspective too.
take the kids to a park with some equipment and let your husband play with them while you stay in the back ground. no “look over here” “smile now” type stuff. and don’t tell them what to do. no “time for the slide now”. let them do what they want and just record it. preferably from their eye level. use the long zoom. it will blur out the background some thus highlighting the kids.

Participanti’ll vouch for bulk film too. but you have to be into it since you will need canisters, bulk film, time to load the canisters. but it is a money saver. only downside is IIRC frame numbers. i don’t remember what they did but it wasn’t 1-35.
orionid you have a PM.
after much soul searching i have decided to not go the darkroom route. that means the misc stuff i have in my attic is up for grabs since it’s unlikely my sister wants/needs it. although i will ask her. i have some 11×14 trays, a tank or two, hangers (the ones with the pins) and other piddly stuff. i seem to remember an 8×10 easel. oh and a grain magnifier. i’ll get it down and make a list and post the results in a new thread. then we can decide who wants what. it will be free except for shipping.
