Ok then I’d say it’s a fit

Ok, thanks Kestrana!

I have no idea what those are…are they competitive things that you might see at the state fair, for example?

Yeah, maybe at a fair or they have specific competitions for those activities, also in rodeos.

[kashari]

How about equine competition types of things like ‘cutting cattle’ (separating one from the herd) or ‘reigning’? I don’t like or attend baseball, football or basketball games, so the only things I’d have like that are when the family kids are messing around playing basketball… 🙁

I think the strict spirit of the theme is to have people go for 15 minutes (say, plus or minus a minute) and photograph what’s there. As long as the shots fit that requirement, then they’re good, whether you’re aiming for a spot, just exploring, or using archival footage. Obviously we can’t police the travel time-we’re all on our honor to abide by that rule.

Ok, thanks!

[kashari]

I assume the spirit of this theme is to take new pictures, but will old ones be accepted as long as they fit within the distance parameters? I’m without both of my DSLRs right now and am not sure if I’ll have one back before the contest. I have a compact I can use, but the zoom sucks.

I think that some combination of a terrabyte hard drive (probably internal on the desktop) with an online back up service is probably the way to go for us. Carbonite does not back up an external hard drive. So I’ll keep looking around at online back up services – perhaps CISS‘s suggestion. I have about 100 GB of photos and other stuff so mozy is out with its 125 GB limit.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I knew you guys (and gals) would not disappoint.

I was really disappointed when they changed their plans, but I guess they can’t make much money giving people unlimited storage for 2 years for $100. I’ve got until Oct 2012 to figure out what I’m going to do. But I liked it because it will back up an external to their servers along with backing up to another local external drive.

[kashari]

I don’t know how much most providers care, but using a web hosting account as file storage for backup purposes (unconnected to a web site) is, at least in many cases, a violation of their TOS, so I would be extremely wary of relying on it.

Yeah, I found this out after I paid for a domain through Arvixe. I called with a question I was told that I was NOT allowed to use it for storage.

I currently have a raided 1 tb x 2 Western Digital My Book, which I backup to Mozy (I got in while it was unlimited storage for 2 yrs for a little over $100 when I signed up) and that process also backs up to a local external 1 tb drive that I then put in my safe. Duplicated that to a 1tb drive which will go into my safe deposit box as soon as my old ass remembers to take it there.

I’m almost out of space on the raided drive and those are now running about $135 on Amazon, so I see another one in my near future.

OK. We’re tentative for Saturday, July 16th. Who’s got a good meeting spot, or shall we keep an eye on the storm tracks and see about spending that evening near a hot spot?

We’ll just be finishing up our family reunion (in Forest Lakes near Payson) on the 15th or 16th, so hopefully I’ll be able to make it. I don’t know of any good spots though…

eta: Just saw Plasma’s post about Tucson, that would be cool too if I’m back and not too burned out from driving.

[kashari]

Not sure why you’d want to visit Arizona during the summer, but I hope you have fun. If for some odd reason you have any time off, we should get an Arizona farktographer meeting going up in phoenix.

I’d be up for that. 🙂 I’d also love to try and learn to photograph lightning, but it’s a little hard to do from my hiding place under the bed. 😉

[kashari]

I’d go for bag cat, the fisheye shot, and long cat.

While we’re throwing out possible entries, anyone have any suggestions from this set – http://www.flickr.com/photos/guine/sets/72157622386003677/

orion: I liked Roxycat, fisheye & long shot.

linguine: Chester 3, soccer & ONW

This is going to be a good one, get the popcorn ready! 🙂 Good luck, everyone!

[kashari]

Should we provide links to bigger pics for the PSers or do they have the same size constraints?

Stay safe, Els and everyone else in the storm areas!

[kashari]

Got it, kashari

Thanks, Elsinore! 🙂

[kashari]

Oops, can I get my first entry envotenated please?

TIA!

[kashari]

Thanks all. I was late entering, but finally decided to use two of my favorites from contests and one new entry.

[kashari]

Ok, thanks! So the original theme is irrelevant and just more what you like best. I’m having a hard time deciding if I want to use old or new ones.
