Even on the expensive ones the light falloff is heavy. Like Sleeping said if you are going to use it for portraits you will need other light sources. If you are using strictly for macro work then form what I hear the cheaper ones work OK. You could also look into the LED ringlights which I hear are pretty good for macro work and not very expensive.

I saw a woman at a show last year using a Canon one and it left me scratching my head. I never saw her post any of the shots so I gather it was a failure.

The Aliens had a birthday party and one of the young aliens let go of their alien balloon and it floated away from the mothership.

I think the emphasis is supposed to be on the play of light and shadow across the subject. In that photo, the subject is pretty well lit even if the background isn’t. But I’m still wrapping my mind around this one, so I could be wrong.

That was my thought too. Just getting a bit of clarification.

I already feel guilty about hanging around here engaging in little participation, but if themes like this keep showing up I’m going to have to make an effort… I’m going to have to start sometime I guess and I’ve seen 3 themes today that have me wanting to get involved. This forum is a hard course for someone who knows jack-all about photography.

The great thing about this forum is that if you ever have a photography question you will get dozens of relatively snark free answers. Speaking for myself, this forum and farktography itself is what brought me back into photography.

Cool story bro: Yesterday morning I woke up from a dream in which I was noticing that my coffee cup looked like the letter Q. I was in the process of getting my camera to take a photo for this contest when the alarm went off. That is where my inspiration for the shot came from. Unfortunately I see ZE had the same dream with a better photo!
