ParticipantRAW is better – but only if you have the ability to use it. From what you’re describing, it’s not appropriate for your uses, so save yourself the conversion time and shoot. Jpgs
Appropriate usage would largely be if you have a reasonable expectation of printing in larger than 8×10?
(Or at least wish to be ready for that?)Or is it also about the ability to severely crop and still get good shots (like for birding or sports from the stands?)
Or both?
But for those of us generally shooting for computer-based usage (Farktography, or classroom presentations on lcd projector) .jpgs are generally OK, no?

ParticipantYugoboy, where did you find this? I would love to credit it when I steal for my Facebook!
No, wait, found it! AWESOME!
For everyone else, it came from this link I saw in the PSAEF:

There’s a whole bunch of fun ones…

ParticipantThe single predictable response to the voting change will be the minority (and the trolls) who will inevitably decry the reversion. Let’s just be prepared for this annoyance, shall we?

ParticipantIf I’d have thought that archive diving was OK, I’d have picked some books about Rome or Italy… 😉
I’m glad I had to go out and shoot something new. It was a challenge I enjoyed.

Participantfluffybunny the windmill picture is awesome!

(I had a reason to visit a couple parking garages in the city… discovered the swirly things that made ravnostic‘s entry so cool aren’t limited to whatever city he’s in… I’ve never considered them as vantage points for photography at altitude, but…)I haves been intri-goo’yed. And I haz no ting. Haven’t even tried. Might skip it. Hate to, though.
One reason 101 Damnations worked so well is that it’s basically 101 humorists griping about daily life… so the quotes were about subject matter at hand… tomorrow’s Tuesday… you’re getting to the point where you’re going to have to pull out a tour guide or a book about the Cardinals 😉

ParticipantExcept for “Mandatory Procrastination” I do believe this is the first contest I waited until the week of, and shot specifically for.
My three quotes (after some false starts in other tomes) came from 101 Damnations : http://www.amazon.com/101-Damnations-Humorists-Personal-Hells/dp/0312284802 which worked perfectly.
I actually remembered this week that years and years ago I had purchased a 2 light bar at a garage sale. I actually needed it for one of my quotes. The coolest thing (to me) is that it was designed for photographic use as it mounted perfectly on my tripod.
So… after I hit the treadmill I’m gonna do my selecting from all the shots and get my entries set up.
This turned out far more fun than I expected

ParticipantHmmm… we’ve got a decent sized Indian population here, too. Sounds like something to Google…
Thanx for letting me know.

ParticipantCould someone who reads contemporary fiction post three for me?
I’ve been on a history kick lately, and that puts me at a distinct disadvantage. Chicago has laws against using a Vickers or Maxim gun to mow down conscripted peasantry.I feel your pain. I pretty much only read history these days. I’m thinking of using a book and then going to a large cemetery to shoot the names I find/am assigned.
If you leave yourself open enough to interpretation, you could use the history stuff… from your example above – Brian Vickers is a NASCAR driver – shoot somebody wearing a Brian Vickers hat. And Maxim… I do believe there’s a magazine by that name…
I just finished The Cold War by John Lewis Gaddis. If I open to a passage on Russia, I can shoot some vodka, or a passage on Germany gets me a BMW or Mercedes, and if I pull the Berlin Wall, I’ve got some archive shots of pieces of it from FDR’s place in Hyde Park. You’re a creative out-of-the-box kind of guy… you can do this!

ParticipantYes, I believe we are all in that boat. I am hoping this when mixed in with the talent in our group and the ultra wide variety of themes will all conspire to make me a better photographer. If nothing else it is fun and photography has always helped me to see the world and life in general in a better light.
/pun absolutely intended
This is how it’s worked out for me. The occasional highly voted picture is a bonus.
I just appreciate having a reason to shoot often.
Even when I am not shooting for a theme, I’m purposely bringing my camera to shoot whatever because at some point it might be a theme. I have zero problem archive diving for the majority of my pics. I know some people like to shoot for specific contests (and sometimes I’m aware of hoppered themes when shooting, so I kind of do, too) but I’m just as happy shooting everything and finding pix to fit the theme.

ParticipantI’ll be happy to proof-read.
Anything to contribute, as I’m too late to get pix in.
I’ll also see if I can rustle up a bugdozer.

ParticipantIt occurs to me that a “Difficulty: No Post-Processing besides resize and crop” may be in order.
I noticed while doing a photoshop for Misfit Squirrels that the Filter Forge free pack of filters includes a Holga setting. Obviously, I won’t be using that, but it might be important to warn others.
…except that would completely screw me because I have to take photos of my developed film on a white light table, then invert, brighten/contrast/etc. using photoshop since I don’t print the images out directly from the lab. The general rules are pretty clear regarding what sort of rules apply – software filters are already included, I believe.
…or not

ParticipantHow do these cameras’ stand up when images are printed? That’s likely where the rubber’s gonna hit the road, especially at a larger print size.
It’s also, like it or not, becoming increasingly irrelevant. How many people do you know under the age of 60 who aren’t serious photographers who print images on a regular (or even irregular) basis?
That’s sort of my point…
