ParticipantI have a few tricks up my sleeve for this one.
I can imagine!
ennuipoet film is welcome, but the submissions should showcase composition + camera settings as opposed to darkroom techniques.

ParticipantVery cool, congrats!

ParticipantOh man that sucks. Wishing you best of luck with this. Hope you find some solution other than selling your camera. I like your attitude–keep positive and you can beat this. Don’t let the bastards get you down!

Participant… I am wondering if I am allowed to use representations of swine (statuary, stuffed animals, cartoonish imagery on murals or t-shirts) as part of my entry?
If not, I understand, just askin’…
Unless I somehow missed it, I don’t think this was answered, so I’ll bump it to the head of the thread. I would guess that you are allowed to use that stuff, but NoBigDeal is the boss hog on this one.
Fun fact: Pig penises are corkscrew-shaped like their tails.
Myth busted: Pigs do not have 30 minute orgasms. Average mating time is about ten minutes 🙁Zero_Exponent
ParticipantHey ZE, I asked a question over on the sleeve-faced thread but it looks like there’s more action here.
Could I print an album cover from the internets and use that in my photo? As I said there, if the answer is “no”, I’m cool with that.
Sorry about that, U-man. I really need to visit the Themes section more often. I’ll copy the response over there just in case.
I can’t think of a reason this would not be OK. I want to keep this as open as possible, so unless anyone else has objections, that is fine by me. It gives lokisbong (or anyone with limited access to covers) another low-cost option. Hell, I might be able to pull off that KISS idea now! The only restriction I would add: please print the photo the same size as either a record (31.5cm square) or a CD cover (12cm square).

ParticipantJust read in the newspaper that the Bacon Brothers band is coming to a local casino in March. Every concert I’ve been to at that venue, the artists have a meet and greet after the show in the public area. Too late to get Kevin pics for this one, but I might just have to mosey on down there that night, to see if I can get some shots anyway for a possible “Day late and a dollar short” future contest. Note to self: pick up some of that pre-cooked bacon just in case!

ParticipantOh I agree. On my camera, I can set contrast, saturation ,sharpness, and even specific “styles” like landscape or portraiture that create a very specific “look” in the final jpg. Also not sure that’s in the “spirit” of the theme, but it’s in the letter of it if someone does something tweaking those parameters in-camera.
I don’t see why not? Play with the white balance, use your in-camera “film simulator”, whatever “presets” or “styles” you may have … its all good.
Participants with fancy cameras and equipment will have a bit of an advantage, sure … but I can imagine someone winning with a point-and-shoot image that has good lighting and an interesting composition.
The spirit of the theme is similar but different to “Tricky” (ie “I can’t believe its not Photoshop!”), but “trick photography” to me implies an optical illusion of some sort.
Didn’t know that about the RAW format. My current camera exports them as .RAF files which are viewable.

ParticipantI got nuthin.
This despite two road trips specifically for this theme, and an exhaustive search of the archives. Have to sit this one out, but its good to see the participation on this one–lots of Newbs and Kotters this week.

ParticipantCillarySpasm and CauseISaidSo I’m not sure I understand your question. The whole point of this theme is to showcase photographs where the “process” ends at the point you press the shutter. If you are saying that people could “cheat” somehow by shooting in RAW and making adjustments that will not show up in the EXIF … I’m not too worried, because cheaters are gonna cheat. There are no doubt, other ways you could cheat for this theme, but as usual I think the majority will play by the rules.
In the SOOC Flickr group I belong to, posters are required to make their EXIF data accesible, in case the modadmins want to check. I thought about maybe trying that for this contest, but it would not work for a number of reasons (which I wont go into for the sake of brevity).
I was thinking of adding a little disclaimer to the description, something like: “NB: Please list any special equipment (lenses, filters, etc) or techniques (light painting, in-camera multiple exposure, etc) used when capturing your images.”
Sound good?

ParticipantMy two cents: keeping the best and funny stats separately does not bother me at all. Combining them in any way would be unfair, I think.
I like the idea of hiding usernames on the entries. Ideally, I want each photo to be judged on its own merit, not whether a voter likes the cut of my jib.
One other possible suggestion, for the ultimate in fairness: do not show vote totals until the voting is done. I know thats not likely to happen, but just wanted to put that up for consideration.
Farktography is not perfect, but its the best photo contest I’ve found on the net. The system we have is way better than some of the stuff out there. Anyone tried entering a Flickr group contest where the votes are public? The only setup worse than that was the one that had “judges” choose the winner …
… not even counting the “all entries become property of the contest holder” type because that is just some company looking to score some nice photos without having to shell out for a photographer. F*** that sh**!

ParticipantThe sleeve-face theme is postponed, but to answer Kashari‘s questions–yes you may use toys or what-have-you to make a miniature scene or diorama. Fantastic idea, BTW … may try one like that myself.
The use of more than one cover is definitely allowed. In the 70s KISS released four solo albums, each album cover featuring a big headshot of the band member in full makeup. I have a vague idea for a photo, but I doubt I can track down the albums (I’m not willing to spend more than $10 on props, for this or any other Farktography contest–self imposed rule) and then find the four models to be the bodies. Anyone who does do more than one, I will personally take the “difficulty factor” into consideration when voting!
I feel for those who don’t have access to a large record collection. The cheapest option is to find a music collector and ask them if you can go through it. There are luckily a couple of annual record sales that come to our town every January/Feb. All records under $3, thousands to choose from. I plan on going this year for sure.
Libraries are another (free!) way to go, if your local one has CDs or whatever, you might be able to find some good covers you could borrow.

ParticipantWhew, thanks Els!
I’ve done some scouting of record collections and local stores, trying to find some inspiration … got a couple fuzzy ideas … ravnostic, looking forward to see what you and the rest of the group come up with. The one thing I know is that there will be at least one “famous” album that’ll make me say, “Brilliant, why didn’t I think of that!”; and at least one obscure “WTF is that?” album cover.
