ParticipantI gotta give you guys props–because apparently, you will take them and make really cool pictures. I dig all the shots with mini weapons. On monday I tried to see if Dollarama had any bags of weapons, or maybe really cheap action figures with fruit-sized weaponry. I had to settle for an assortment of googly-eyes. At no point, until I saw the thread tonight, did it occur to me to take a pen and draw faces on. That sound you hear now is me banging my head against the wall.

Participant😆 Farktographer, what does it say about us that we both had the torture-prisoner-of-war idea? I blame TV. Or maybe it was those three tours in Da Nang (and all the chemicals ingested along the way) 😯 ]

ParticipantTo paraphrase the great Betty White; I’m not on Facebook, but from what I can tell, its a tremendous waste of time 😆
Seriously though, U-man, your “Tin Man” B is very cool.ennuipoet that set is full of good stuff, must’ve been hard to choose from all your photos for this contest!
I had a surprising number of shots to choose from. I couldn’t find one I was looking for of a homeless man who demanded I take his picture. I did consider another similarly “requested” photo, but didn’t like it as much as the three I entered …

Take my picture!Zero_Exponent
ParticipantCISS thanks! I have at most the maturity level of a 15-year-old, so I pretty much always feel like a kid 🙂
Good to hear, Mopsy! Already sent my farkback. If big-name farktographers like you (or U-man) write in, that will probably carry more weight than upstarts like me. I will also post sumthin in the Forum like Els said. Tomorrow or Saturday though–gotta get up early tomorrow so its bedtime for me.

ParticipantCISS looks fishy to me too. Either the same frame with different post-process, or the exact same composition and crop, with different camera settings.
Elsinore I had noticed the halo in aspidites photo. Thought it could be from selective dodging around the edges? He’s had a couple other entries where I noticed that effect, but since no one else said anything, I kept my yap shut til now.
Finally, I loathe the funny button. The ones that get the most votes are usually humorous, but there’s a whole bunch that are clearly not funny that get votes, for whatever reasons. I don’t know the reasoning behind adding the funny vote–being good and funny are not mutually exclusive, after all. In the old system, if something made me literally laugh-out-loud, I would almost always vote for it. If a funny photo won the contest, I had absolutely no problem with that.
Mopsy I think there is something we can do. I am going to send a Farkback saying that I don’t like the change, list a couple reasons why, and then ask if they can please change it back. If enough of us do this–especially long-time TotalFarkers–they just might listen. I know nothing will change if we just keep quiet … so I would encourage anybody who feels the same to write a Farkback too.

ParticipantBonus: they used one of my photos! First photo credit, sweet!
Now you have your “iconic” photo for that thread 😆
Not my best work perhaps (but far FAR from my worst), but yeah, certainly the most “famous” in terms of eyeballs 😯

ParticipantAlso re vuprop, two things bug me about those photos. One, they look way better than mine and I’m jealous 👿 Two, those huge friggin watermarks ruin it for me. Way over-the-top IMO.

Participantravnostic, sorry to hear you’re having trouble with the new kitty (clean those scratches real good with a disinfectant–cat scratch fever is an actual thing). I have been busy this week trying to get the local media to run stories on a cat that needs a home. Successfully, to my surprise and delight. The smallest local paper ran a story today, featuring it as their “top story” on their website (why yes it was a slow news day). Bonus: they used one of my photos! First photo credit, sweet! The two other newspapers want to do stories on the cat as well, so I’m super-confident somebody out there will want to give the cat a new place to live.

PS I can confirm the new filesize limit; my second entry got rejected and I had to go smaller. I would assume this is a permanent thing–we just got an upgrade, ka-ching!

ParticipantUh-oh, rav is MIA or AWOL. Hopefully he is just detained at the local pub (like I was). Looking at the entries already posted, I think I can pick my (hic) three … but I have a feeling I’m gonna get my butt kicked again. Lots of killer stuff already!

ParticipantHaye – can we do a tryptic in regular threads? Like 2 shots as one?
Unless the contest description mentions it specifically, only one photo per entry is allowed. No stitching, knitting, gluing, welding, etc.
ravnostic, I have one “definitely” for this theme, and a bunch of “maybe”s (may be bees?). The “no concrete, but iron is OK” comment has me a bit confuzzled, so I’m just going to toss some hypotheticals at you; would love a yea or nay ruling when you have a moment:
-buildings/bridges/structures made of stone (not concrete)
-statues or carvings
-sand (desert, beach, sand sculptures)
-things made of metal
-long-haired-freaky-people (need they apply?)Zero_Exponent
ParticipantI’ve had my entries picked out for this one for months now-ever since it went into the hopper. They all happen to be from the same day, actually. It was a very rocky kind of day.
Eastern Sierra trip? I remember the set you posted in the gallery had a lot of mountains and rock formations.
ravnostic don’t sweat your picks–you should know by now the whims of the voters are near-impossible to predict 😛
Look at it this way; less time picking = more time for drinking … actually, I think you should have a few drinks and THEN pick your three 😈Zero_Exponent
ParticipantWell, my first theme suggestion, and it went pretty well. The overall votes were above average, so that’s cool. I didn’t fare so well personally, but I voted for almost every single image that ended up “beating” me, so no shame there.
Congrats to the winners and welcome to all the new people! See you next week, when everybody must get “Stoned”

ParticipantWoot! Just finished posting my pics. Lots of great stuff, lots of paticipants … hopefully there will be lots of votes too, and then everybody will be happy.

ParticipantThis is too easy ennuipoet.
I CAN TELL BY THE PIXELS
Well, that and having seen quite a few photos in your time, right?
ennuipoet, I think it’s all going to have to be on the honor system. I don’t think we have to worry about any of us regulars (at least I hope not), and we can’t have Elsinore doing forensic analysis on every entry, so unless it’s just in-your-face blatant, we’ll have to take everybody’s word for it.
^^^This. I mentioned on pg2 that maybe we should add a note to the description asking posters to describe any special equipment or techniques used. Other than that, there’s not much we can do to stop cheaters, but I’m sure if something looks suspicious, people will be asking questions and/or checking out the EXIF data for evidence.
linguine and kashari, setting the sharpness before you take the pic is fine, adjusting sharpness during resizing is not cool for this one.
I tried doing a search about this PIPA stuff, but all I found was a bunch of sites devoted to some british lady’s posterior 😉

ParticipantKudos to all the top finishers! fluffybunny‘s “Say it with bacon” bouquet elicited a “What the hell … genius!” response from me–ditto for U-man‘s “receive bacon” pic. olavf, I was hoping somebody would bring the bacon underwear, so thank you for that!
