ParticipantThat being said, you can’t swing a dead cat in my town without hitting a church. I need to get busy, I guess.
This is one of the most interesting things to the sociology/anthropology part of my brain when my wife and I go to the south. The number of churches, who attends and the sizes. What really got us was the billboards. Up here you get the occasional Latter Day Saints billboard (especially at Hill Cumorah Pageant time), and the other occasional issue-oriented church-funded billboard. Down south they’re everywhere, doing nothing but trying to guilt you into attending some church or other…
fun times…

ParticipantWhen we pulled into Scotland, we figured that asking for an Irish car bomb was probably a bad idea, so we decided just to call it a “car bomb” instead. When we asked the bartender if she knew how to make a car bomb, she said know, but might know a guy for the right price. So we told her it was a drink, how to make it, and ordered a round. By the end of the night, we had half the bar coming up to us and saying things like “you yanks are allright. These car bombs are pretty good.”
i’m going out on a limb here and guessing you weren’t in uniform.

ParticipantMy understanding was either inside or outside. Yugo?
Either. The only restriction is that it’s got to be a building dedicated to some belief system.
I live in the south. We worship college football on Saturday, Jesus on Sunday, and NFL on Sunday afternoons. Most of the time we talk about Saturday’s worship during Sunday’s. That being said, you can’t swing a dead cat in my town without hitting a church. I need to get busy, I guess.
since you missed thursday and friday night football i’m not believing you live in the south. small town high school football is king !!! nothing more fun than driving into smallsville and seeing a HUGE SIGN saying — home of the AA champs. with all the years listed. downtown has a stop sign, shuttered stores and an abandon grain elevator but by golly they win football games.
oh yeah, a piggly wiggly too.

Participant“Made of Stone” perfectly fine! Sorry for the tardiness–I’ve been trying to adopt a stray cat, and Blert is not having it. At all. Not doing well. I’m scratched up to no end.
cats are more important. and a quick look at the contest tells me my made of stone stuff would have tanked. there is some real nice stuff so far.
Curious
Participantsince we didn’t get a ruling on the “made of stone” as opposed to natural stone i’m going to eat and may check in later. i only have one made of stone and it’s just ok. the archives aren’t producing anything else and my weekends keep getting curtailed.

Participantbtw that is Heamer’s image from several years ago.

ParticipantOh good… this one I’ve got ideas and stuff for… now I’ve just got longer to procrastinate on the sleeves.
I’m gonna shoot this one on film and then past the film canister to my monitor!
I am that hard core! 😛

ParticipantOkay, who else hates the new voting? =P
(this was in place last week, wasn’t it? I missed last week)
Yeah, it’s not proving very popular on the Farktography side of things.
overall the photoshoppers hate it if comments in the PSAEF are any guide. i sure hate it. and regular thread voting? WTF. really WTF.

Participantmine don’t reek of
desperation (ooops they do)desolation but after a few weeks of having nada it’s nice to post again.Curious
Participantliving here the swamps aren’t remote. but i may use one or two anyway.

Participantwell i screwed up by procrastinating. lost track of the days (hard to do since i’m only working tuesdays — and worked yesterday) and when i realized i needed to shoot today nothing came to mind. should have got up grabbed the camera and gone looking for a winning entry.
but i didn’t and now it’s too late unless i want to enter utter crap. not this week thanks.

Participantok you have D&D with caps then you have dungeons and (mythical) dragons with out caps. are all fair game?
for instance i have a bow and some arrows. like a step or two above what a kid might have. if i took a picture ……… well right now i have no idea how i’d make an interesting photo of them but if i did ………..

Participanthaving a literal mind when the theme said buildings i shot buildings. not pieces of them. or gargoyles or whatever. but looking at the contest it seems others weren’t as literal so i dumped my post office building for a partial of the pearl river county courthouse.
and i added explanatory text, sue me 🙂
Curious
Participant1) i did get to go shooting today. a pretty (warm) november day washed clean by the mornings heavy rain.
2) no one accused me of being a terrorist.
3) using the original theme i shot a small town post office. of my 48 frames it’s a lot better than many others including several of a courthouse. to be told at this point that it’s not acceptable is …….. horsepucky for want of another word.
Yugoboy my complaint isn’t directed at you personally but the last minute change.

I got more grief at a local museum (not much) than I have anywhere in the south.
there is a small town in west AR where every time i went through i got stopped. mid afternoon, midnight, didn’t matter. also didn’t matter what i was driving. car, converted school bus, work truck.
anyway the sheriff simply ask if i/we had any alcohol, ask to check the cooler and then let us leave. always polite but always stopped. this was in the early to mid 70s.
since then i’ve done a fair amount of traveling in TX, LA, MS, far south AL and west FL all with no problems. and a lot of that in LA and MS since 9-11. all had lots of picture taking going on. but none of government buildings.
we shall see. i didn’t go today but now plan to go wednesday.
