ParticipantThe B&W of the little boy in a cape (which is doing OK in the voting) in my opinion is a power, moving photograph but I know the backstory on it.
FWIW, I think it’s the best photo in the thread, myself.
I guess I could have vote whored that shot with the backstory, but I didn’t think it needed it.
It doesn’t…
Whoa!
Thanks!
It is truly appreciated!

ParticipantLooking at the vote totals now they are getting closer to what I expect. I think many of you are right when you say art is lost on Farkers, but not in a mean way. I based my voting this week on a simple criteria: would I see something like it in a gallery? Then I decided whether I liked it or not. I think that what art is so subjective that people who like art are voting on a set of internal criteria instead of just clicking what they like which I think they normally do in a thread.
I do also feel like Elsinore, that maybe I ‘wasted’ a shot. The B&W of the little boy in a cape (which is doing OK in the voting) in my opinion is a power, moving photograph but I know the backstory on it. I took the shoot at a Gay Pride Parade and the little boy was dressed as a superhero because he wanted to defend his mothers from the kind of people that wouldn’t let them get married. I took without the kid knowing I was there, but I had to go find out the story. Fortunately, I have three other shots of him that are just as good 😀 I guess I could have vote whored that shot with the backstory, but I didn’t think it needed it.

Participantennuipoet, I love your HDR photo. Too bad you could not use it. I happen to be one of the ones that really likes HDR and it does have an “artistic” look to it. In fact, I’m going to stick my neck out and ask why HDR is so often ruled out. Lately, it seems, that there are a growing number of photos using techniques that change the finished product much the way HDR does. Just an observation.
I think it is because when people hear HDR, they think this:
When I first started using the technique, I went for the crazy, distorted unrealistic stuff and the realized the technique was created for overcoming technical limitations. When used to create realistic images like the second one, I think it should be considered as valid as any darkroom method to enhance exposure. But that is purely an opinion.
ETA: I should amend this statement to say that I am not advocating HDR in every theme! I think the process has a real and effective use in themes like this one, having the threads littered with overdone photoshopped crap would irk me as much as it would anyone who dislikes the process in general.

Participantand this is why i decided to fore go tonight’s contest. nothing i have really speaks to me in that way. and if not me then most likely not the voters either.
I had a hard time with tonight, I know what I wanted to submit

which I consider the most artistic work I’ve done. Unfortunately, it’s an HDR shot. What I went with was selected by a set of arbitrary criteria rather than the work which I think best represents the theme. But, hey, when it’s my theme I get to make the rules 😀

ParticipantAlso, orionid, I’m pretty sure he is actually wearing pants, but I am to afraid to zoom in close enough to know for sure.
How sure are you that that is a ‘he’? I’m also not brave enough to look closely.
It does have a mustache…but then, so did Aunt Bunny.

ParticipantGood deal–are you talking about the distortion from the way the camera progressively scans during exposure? Cause I’ve seen some really cool stuff from those cameras. Also feeling the AE-1 love…my Dad left me an AE-1P, and it’s just a beautiful camera.
I just came in from shooting with my AE-1 given to me by my parents. It’s 30 years old, photographed me as kid, my High School graduation, my sister’s wedding (my first stint as a wedding photographer) and I can’t remember how many other things. If my house was on fire and I could grab one camera it would be the AE-1. (This of course could never happen because all my gear is constantly packed and in one place so if the house were on fire, I could grab it all at once and run…I also do this with the cats*, they hate sleeping in the little box but safety first!)
*Not really

ParticipantI fully support punishing those who do cross the line, I just don’t think that particular image of SilverStag‘s was over the line. Meh, just one guy’s opininion FWIW.
I see what you’re saying and I agree with you about SilverStags‘s but I know Fark and I know a few Moderators who are prematurely graying due to being Fark Mod’s 🙂 The best comparison I can think of is cat herding.

ParticipantIt will, of course, be a self portrait.
I think that would count as NSFW
/but funny[/quote]If I were to actually do it (which I’m not!) not only would it be NSFW, but also like staring into the the face of Cthulhu. I would feel guilty about causing mass insanity to thousands.
Also, orionid, I’m pretty sure he is actually wearing pants, but I am to afraid to zoom in close enough to know for sure.

ParticipantFARK/Drew, I am disappoint. Nothing there you couldn’t see at a public beach.
You have to look at it from the Modmin’s P.O.V. if they start to blur the line a little bit and the next thing you know, it’s frickin’ 4chan in the thread. You, and I, and the rest of the regular Farktographers know where the line is and how not cross, the drunk ass moron at 3:3O AM who starts posting “art shots” of donkey porn because he saw a glimpse of boobie upthread not only doesn’t know where the line is, he wouldn’t know it if he tripped over it.
And it’s ALWAYS a he.

ParticipantSo, I am researching today, and I think I’ve found my lead entry

It will, of course, be a self portrait.

ParticipantI am in the thread waitin’ for the Boobies, refreshing every few seconds like I like to do and I see photos popping up, and when I refresh they are gone and a new/different one is there. I’m like WTF? Am I in the wrong thread, is something wrong with Fark, no seriously, WTF, and then I refresh and see wait for the boobies and I realized that Elsinore must be deleting them as fast as I am refreshing. Truly a strange moment, but amusing 8)

ParticipantCool shots, you and orionid are making me wish I had room or time for playing around in a darkroom again.
Space wasn’t to bad, just the tanks and a closet to hang my film in. Cost wise, the scanner was the only thing that set me back a large chunk of change, the actual tanks, bags, chemicals all came in under $50. The film ran that up, but I am going to do bulk in the future.
Time, well that is the hard part. While it was the first time in over 20 years, I was still over two hours developing two rolls. Of course, most of that time was spent with my hands in a dark bag dredging up new profanities while trying to get film on the reel.
ennuipoet
ParticipantYeah….. Technology’s a biatch sometimes. I guess that should read “most things” done in camera. General concensus has been if you can do it with film, and your digital camera allows it, it’s kosher.
It is the wave of the future. As more and more on board digital effects come in camera they are going to spew like warm beer vomit over the photography landscape. (And this is from me, who LIKES HDR). Basically, technology is progressing to the point that it removes the necessity of knowledge or talent from the creative process. Ain’t the future grand!

ParticipantI decided to make an A-Z list of things to photograph to start looking at things differently. I showed it to my husband and he said I was focusing on the wrong things and made me a different list. Thought I’d share it here, in case anyone is curious.
Airy
Bright
Clear
Depressing
Exciting
Fresh
Gross
Heavy
Iced
Jumping
Knobbly
Lively
Monotone
Nocturnal
Opulent
Precious to a child
Quiet
Revealing
Secluded
Timid
Unsafe
Voluptuous
Wire
Xanthic (a yellowish color, or a fair haired pale-skinned person)
Youthful
ZealousHe also said that if he didn’t like how they came out that he’d “throw it away” and tell me to do it again. Yeesh.
Now that is a list of things to photograph, I think I want someone to make me a list like that. I challenges the mind. I enjoy the themes we do, but I am always thinking about them with an eye to voting and it changes how and what I shoot. This is an advantage because it teaches me how to shoot for other people but I am not shooting for “Me”. A list like this is a great way to open your mind, though your Resident Critic seems like a hardass 😀
