ParticipantThanks. See you for ‘Airborne’ in a few days.

ParticipantCompliment, of course.

ParticipantI generally post mine in the order I like them. But in a bit of geometric OCD perhaps, if I have two portaits and a landscape (or vice versa), I’ll rearrange the order so that the odd man out is framed by the other two. Hmm. That sounds weird even to me after writing it out…
Is it bad that I don’t thing that is at all weird?

ParticipantWOW
NOW you tell me. I had four Word docs set up for my submissions. I chose the 4 year old in the pool with goggles instead of this one.
Shoulda picked this one. :/
That’s how the game goes.

This is a 30 sec exposure of lightning bugs in a ‘jar’. I took some at my place with an actual Mason jar but can’t find the effing pics. They didn’t turn out as well as I wanted anyway. This pic was done at my sister-in-laws and she didn’t have real jar. They would walk along the glass, flashing intermittently.

ParticipantKeep your old prescription bottles, fill them with capsules full of sugar or whey protein or whatever (purebulk.com is awesome), keep it in your camera bag.
Then, when someone hassles you, start muttering to yourself, look them in the eye for a bit like you don’t think they can see or hear you, keep muttering, pour some pills into your mouth straight from the bottle, chew, exhale some sugar/whey/whatever in an angry sigh, cough, have something to drink, then get back to photographing while muttering.
You’ll have saved yourself a conversation and gotten a bit of nutrition too.
They also make caffeine snuff now, if you think snorting something would work better in your area.I started reading this without noting the author. About 1/3 of the way through I knew it was you. Checked the name and said aloud, “no fuckin’ way” while grinning a little. It’s good to hear from you.
I don’t know what I can do to help with your journey – but if I can, just let me know. (ummmm, my lenses and other gear won’t help you. I know this because I am a doctor.) 🙂

Participant…but I’m rather new to photography….but I will keep trying….I like the idea of a weekly challenge to try new things.
We all started there. If you stick around, you’ll find that this is a great place to grow up. Supportive, challenging, fun etc. There are some smart folks here. And while we are all a bit insane about the photos, we also realize that we’re amateurs and can continue learning.
Welcome.

ParticipantOk, so U-Man, I’ve been trying to figure out your Children of the Corn lighting. I’m guessing you had a flash, but I can see sky with clouds above part of the corn, but other parts look flat black?
This was taken a few years back…
I had a flash and silver umbrella high (10 feet?) at 12 o’clock. It was afternoon so the flash acted as key but there was plenty of ambient. I processed it using the sliders in Photoshop’s Black & White tool.

ParticipantThanks guys. I alternate between “It’s only money. Nothing irreplaceable was lost.” to a rueful chuckle to being pissed at myself…and back to the fact that nothing irreplaceable was lost.
Plus, it was JUST a Canon. I mean, imagine how pissed I would be if it were a Nikon. 🙂

ParticipantFor those of you who aren’t facebook friends – check this shiat out. I copied my last status about the $3000 musky I caught today. 🙁
I went fishing today and, as usual, I had my camera and tripod in the boat. When the fish aren?t biting I?ll take photos. When the big fish bite, I take a photo of me holding it before release. I caught this guy today at Banner Marsh. With the fish in the net (still in the water) I set up my camera and tripod on the front seat. The, using the self timer, I took a pic of me and the fish sitting on the back seat. After the first one, I rushed forward and pushed the button for just one more pic. As I sort of ran to the back of the boat I heard a ?SPLASH? and got a sick feeling in my stomach. I turned and my camera was GONE. Just like in the movies, there were ripples and some bubbles where it went in. I must have rocked the boat enough and it just fell into the lake.
I said, ?Oh f*ck!?.
I immediately released the fish (he did OK and slowly swam away) and sort of dug around with my net. No luck. I then stripped down and jumped in! I spent the next 20 minutes chest deep in weedy lake water holding onto the side of my boat ? feeling around with my toes. Nothing.
Banner Marsh – 1, Ulle ? 0.
If you want to price check, it was a Canon 7D, EF-S 17-55 F/2.8 lens, 16 Gig Extreme IV CF card and a UV haze lens filter. Oh yeah, and a Manfrotto 725B tripod.

ParticipantApologies if the content of my photos offends anyone.
They’re not at all offensive to me. I find them an artful expression.
/I hope you find your way through this soon.

Participant(I usually don’t ask, but IMO clicking the pops-to-larger is worth it for this one)
It was indeed. I love the mix of stars and fading light.
Thanks. A quiet cornfield was just what the doctor ordered for that night.

ParticipantReading these comments is pretty neat. It make me think (again) about one of the big reasons I’m here. And that reason is you guys. Seriously. There isn’t a jag-bag comment in here. We all seem to recognize what we have in our little community – a supportive, fun, stimulating, sometimes silly, sometimes technical, etc place to share our passion for photography. Jerks aren’t welcome. (Or at least if you are a jerk you can’t act like one here. 🙂 )
Thanks. 🙂
And Elsinore, I understand where you are coming from. But in my opinion, you don’t need to worry about it. You do a great job as our captain. I have complete faith in your integrity and intelligence. I think everybody here does.
But I recognize that not everybody that participates is here and there could be incorrect perceptions by some. To be honest, I don’t think I would like to have the authority to end a theme myself. I understand your reluctance to take on that responsibility. If possible. I do like the idea of a firm stop time. That could actually add some spice to the close ones – like the end of a race. But if you/Drew/”they” can’t get a firm time, I like how olavf summed it up with “How about changing it to something thanking the n00bs for coming out, acknowledging the winner (or potential winners) and move the ‘official’ congrats to that shiny new thread we have on the side bar?” The prior FSM and the present Bibliostats are a definite plus and at least intermittent reminders about them could boost popularity.
My eyes are about ready to fall out of my head so I’m going to stop rambling. To sum it up – don’t worry about it. Nothing is perfect. Any negative issues here aren’t your ‘fault’ and aren’t that important. This is farktography.

ParticipantU-man – The wording specified people, but it’s because I didn’t even think of shots like this. I like the idea of animal paths being included, but I’ll leave this open to people below…should we allow this and change the wording of the theme (or is it too late being only 24 hours away?), or do we even need to change the wording of the theme to allow it? Personally, I think it’s valid for entry but fear a last-minute change like that might upset people…
Since we are so close to game-time, I think we should keep the wording as-is. If it was clearly a game trail (like a deer path up a hill) that people could walk on then it would be OK. My shot is really just a set of mouse/varmint tracks, rather than a trail.
U-Man
ParticipantJust to be clear, these are people pathways. Right? Or would animal tracks in snow work?
