ParticipantI’m glad orionid’s picture is doing well because it makes it worthwhile to have hiked a mile into a state park through three feet deep snow and blizzard conditions specifically to take it!
Sometimes you have to suffer for your art or in this case you suffer for your spouse’s art as well.
I knew when I saw that show up on flickr a few days ago that it was going to do really well. I think my exact thoughts were “dammit orionid”. It’s really lovely.
/edited to note that your pics are awesome too.

ParticipantI’m probably going to get my ass kicked this week. How is that different than other weeks? Not so much. I just hope I don’t ding my average too much. It went way up thanks to last week’s contest.

ParticipantThat being said, the entires still needs to have the element of an object’s color popping right out at you.
Hmm… I think that eliminates one of my entries because the color doesn’t pop enough.

ParticipantCool shots. Those would work for weather, but you could also use some of those for I’m Beginning to See a Pattern.

ParticipantI really liked heebe_stevo‘s picture as well. It has a casual snapshot feel but it’s well composed and the expression on the guy’s face is priceless. The picture really captures to fun evening on the town vibe.

ParticipantJust an observation – it looks like the sparks and arcs are doing better in the voting than the other flashy things. I’m a little disappointed that my pic isn’t doing better, but I’m glad I didn’t post any more pics of flashy things to wreck my average which has been slowly and steadily creeping upward. Voters. I’ll probably never figure them out.

ParticipantGreat shots – they make this southern girl shiver. I don’t get the ice canoe races. Must be an Canuck thing.

ParticipantI take it that magic window for cooperative kids is somewhere between 5 and 14. My 4-year old is pretty uncooperative when it comes to posing. Lately, she’s been a little better because I have been taking pictures of things rather than her. If I’m taking too many pictures of things, she’ll pose and say “take a picture of me”.

ParticipantI’ve never got what I consider to be perfectly lit pictures straight out of the camera so take my advice with a grain of salt. On overcast snowy days, I use the cloudy white balance setting and then I up the exposure compensation to +1.0 or as much as +1.7. This keeps the snow from looking gray.
Sometimes I cheat and use the snow/beach scene mode if I’m trying to figure out what to do, I put it on that mode and take a few snaps to see what the camera thinks is best. Then I switch back to manual or aperture to see if I can make the shots better.

ParticipantNo B&H gift cards and sadly no macro lens. I’m saving up for that and should have it by my birthday in the spring. I did get a nice backpack camera bag from PeriRies. He got a mini HD camcorder from me. When he posts his first YouTube video of the cats fighting, I’ll be sure to post a link.
All it all, it was a lovely holiday at home with my little family. Tomorrow the extended family arrives.

In hindsight, I probably should have used the first one instead of the flower shot. This is why I shouldn’t wait until the night of the contest to post. Oh well.

Maybe I’ll get my photo-mojo back in the new year. When I do, I’ll come back to this thread for cool ideas. Lots of good stuff this week.

ParticipantI just have ONE question for everyone who posted a macro/close shot of their cats (Rav!) howinhell did you convince the cat to stay still long enough to compose and shoot? My cats SEE a camera and they become furry blurs.
Fat Load is really lazy so if you catch him in a laying about mood, he won’t get up for anything but a plate of tuna. Our other cat is scared of his own shadow so there are far fewer pictures of him.

ParticipantI don’t have a dog in this hunt, but I thought I would weigh in anyway. I like the idea of a photography or arts based charity. My vote is for the International League of Conservation Photographers and Child’s Play. Although I wouldn’t complain about a donation to Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.
