Participantthe more i read this discussion the more i suspect my entries will tank. and the more i wonder what will end up in the contest.
on contests in general:
1) those of us that have been here a while want the contests to get more defined so we will be stretched for our entries both technically and creatively.
2) the rabble won’t and never have read the description.
3) the rabble seem to have problems even following the contest theme.
4) from the beginning the contests were meant to be inclusive.
5) there is a paradox in this somewhere./rambling

Participanti just shot one of the “games” i want to use and it says it’s a puzzle. that ok?
it’s similar to rubic’s cube in that you have to solve the puzzle by assembling a bunch of oddly shaped parts into a fixed shape.

ParticipantAhhhh. I remember the days when we had themes like, “Red. Take a photo with some red in it.” 🙂
i literally laughed out loud.
i am planing on using a brain teaser thingy and it didn’t occur to me that some might not think it was a game. how to shoot it is the question.

Participantas has the realization that my tamron lenses on my Canon body do *not* auto focus with precision;
my tamron on my maxxum 7D does the same thing. but so does the minolta kit lens that came with the camera. it tends to focus slightly in front of where i want it to. i only use the spot focus because when i used any of the area types the results were too random. a maxxum 7D review talked about using the sharpen feature but after reading the manual several times i’m thinking they meant when you process from RAW.

ParticipantOkay, Kestrana & Else; I’ll go with the mtns. I just fear everyone and their brother will have that same shot–only better (that was a P+S camera; I didn’t even have a RAW to work with…). I’ll hope my other two do well, at least. And as always, I always keep the b-sides in mind for possible future contests.
my guess is that this theme will produce a mountain of snapshots and few really technically brilliant ones.
as far as having a shot like someone else try a theme like flowers and see how that works out for you.
my best entry in terms of votes was a snapshot of an interesting subject that matched the theme well. IMO technical merit doesn’t sway the voters too much.

Participanti know we are on the honor system here but if i shot out the side window (window rolled down) at a high shutter speed it will be difficult to tell that shot from any other. so do we need, or would it be better if, some of the car interior was shown?
Curious
Participanti have some semi decent rainbow shots taken the other day on the way to work. wrong side of the car however and just FYI taking pictures on the interstate at 70 mph is stupid. especially when the traffic stops as you are composing a shot.

ParticipantRain is hard enough as it is. That said, rain is falling water, so I never specified the source *had* to be atmospheric clouds, either. I’m move for leniency here.
it’s your theme and your call
BUT
don’t we want these contest to be challenging?
IMO it’s ok if not everyone can play every week. i have never lived where it snows any measurable amount and for contests about snow i’m pretty much out. rain and i’m good, so this week i had choices.
we have a contest every week, please let’s try to stick to the theme more closely. IMO we get better photos both in quality and creativity that way. as for leaving it to the voters … hell the posters often don’t read the theme guidelines do you really think the voters do?
Elsinore (and other old timers) have heard me on this before but i felt compelled to post.

ParticipantI am stuck with all archive stuff this week I have one I know is worth using. Not sure about more than that.
Me, too. I was *hoping* our 10% chance of rain today resulted in opportunity, but as usual, not so much in Az.
It’ll be a weak show from me.
thanks to Alex we got rain toady around lunch time but i didn’t like today’s shots any better than my archives. so archives it is.
After you log in, we remember who you are and what you are wearing.
which is why i never wear anything when logged in.
now try and get that image out of your mind

Participantif you couldn’t tell i was a minolta fanboy starting with my first SRT102. i’d be one still if they hadn’t sold out to sony. one advantage to staying with minolta was my 15′ remote cable release fits both the 7i and the 7D.

Participantjust looked at the contest and voted. add me to the list of impressed folks lokisbong

ParticipantI didn’t realise people were still running 1024×768, what is this the middle ages??
at that setting i get the page in the 20″ monitor without scrolling right to left and don’t have to squint to read the text. our shipping monitor is set to tiny text and it’s a wide screen. i can barely read it with reading glasses, i have no idea how the others can use it.
of course they are 15 – 20 years younger 🙂

Participanti want to thank everyone who opined on pops to bigger. my basic position is to even the playing field in so far as possible. by the same token we aren’t all equal in equipment, what we use to edit our entries (levels, etc.), how they are resized or frankly the skill of the photographer.
and i too have used captions and did tonight to explain where the shots were taken. i doubt anyone will think “hey a new orleans photo” and vote because of that but, again frankly, i won’t turn down a vote.
re the 640 x 640 we had that as a contest and while it was fun IMHO every week would be boring. that said my monitor is set at 1024 x 768 and for those entries where you have to scroll it is a distraction. that includes one of mine tonight.
so in conclusion bigger is better but i hope folks vote for the entry as it is seen on fark.
Curious
ParticipantIt comes down to a question of what the voters are voting on. The photo you posted or the photo you link/pop-link to or a combination of the two?
that how i feel about the ubiquitous “pops to bigger” that we see so much of. hell yeah all our entries look better bigger but the contest in held on fark with a 640 pixel width and 200KB file size.
and any captions added are to enhance the image 99% of the time. and therefore should be against the rules.

Participantso i go to Biloxi today to maybe get some new shots from a favorite cemetery. that doesn’t work out for this contest but that was ok and i come back on the cost road. a quick stop for lunch and then as as i travel west … WTH the road is blocked and the Gulfport police are making everybody detour. i can see down the road some flashing lights but nothing distinctly. and all the side roads leading back to the coast are blocked to cars but some people seem to be waking in that direction.
i pride myself on keeping up with the news but had to ask one of the cops what was going on.
oh yeah, the president was in Gulfport today.
