Well hell, I’m finally going to have to create a Facebook account now…

It had to happen eventually, and this sounds like a great way to get started.

as good or better than why i got one. and besides if you generally ignore it and keep your friends list small it’s not too bad.

despite having a few gigs of bird pictures i am going to try and get some new ones. from what i remember of past bird shots here there will be some stiff competition.

when i posted the boobies to this thread i had no idea what if any conversation there had been behind the scenes. and frankly i was a bit worried that there hadn’t been any or if some not enough. seems my worries were well founded.

so we now have the chance to start over. i’m proposing that a Farktography mod or admin start a sticky thread (perhaps in the contests section) where we can debate the pros and cons, decide on what rules will apply and how the new contest boobies (or perhaps a second special notice post) will alert the participants that their photos may be used in a photoshop contest.

these can be fun and it seems there is a general consensus to do one.

Do photoshop contests ordinarily get permission before using images?

I could see how people would be upset by it, but unless they take their images down 2 days after a contest I don’t see any way to prevent it from happening on any number of other sites.

of course the answer to this is no. and not only no but hell no. i’ll pull a number from my ass and say that 99.8% of the photoshop “O’s” and resulting contest entries are from StumbleOn and GIS and similar sources. and i’ll bet that in almost all cases there is no prior permission. there have been a couple of complaints that i know of but they were resolved amiably.

today i came across a thread here about miller9 being in a chain email. it happens.

all that said it would be too bad if someone were to take offense.

so Elsinore if you want to contact Drew and chat with him it would probably be best if done soon. personally i hope the contest stays and no one gets upset. it is Fark after all.

and again just FYI, BTW and OMGBBQ one of the current entries used Zeke’s cat with food trail 🙂

i’m with you on that. today when the contest was mentioned in the PSAEF i posted some info and links to what we had done before. the most recent i could find was a conversation from 2007 that went nowhere. it’s in the “photoshoptography” section. i also posted a link to the thread re photoshop friendly farktographers.

just FYI and BTW (and OMGBBQ, etc) the submitter doesn’t have anything in the anniversary contest. nor is he a member here, at least not under the same screen name. he does photoshop some and has been a farker since 2005.

when first submitted the contest was red almost immediately. as to why it went from red to green —

shot new stuff for this contest rather than using archives since, like Zumaki, i really like macro shots. well one is archive but it was too good to pass on. am also planning to link to a wider/larger shot for reference.

i expect lots of good pictures given the skill level shown in past farktography contests.

    ok clarify these:

    1) how about small natural dams that don’t really stop flow but divert it?

    2) locks. as in the things used to raise/lower boats along a river or canal?

I had a friend of mine who is a native of Louisiana who practically yelled at me .She says It’s bad ju ju or bad luck or some such when I told her I had been to the local cemetery.

were that true i’d be in deep shit. been photographing grave yards since the early ’70s.

or maybe that explains my life for the past 35+ years 🙂

and as Choc-Ful-A and others have pointed out it’s as much an act of appreciation and recognition as anything else.

since there are hundreds of digital images to sort through (and hundreds more on film) finding just three will be tough. and whatever gets posted will be second and third guessed no matter which they are.

this is from the “signs” contest and was taken in my favorite (semi) local cemetery.

not having any bright ideas for new shots i dug through the archives and after discarding the long dead animal photos found three i liked. they are a bit of a stretch on the theme judging by what’s entered but i wasn’t going for votes.

I’m using my favorite shot that I’ve taken so far with my d60. It’s a simple shot of a strand of wildflowers. Don’t know what it is I just fell in love with it instantly. I’m very interested to see how it resonates with others.

If it’s like any of my favorites that I posted it will resonate like this… *thud*
    😉

Farktography is a fickle beast, but that’s what makes it more fun than a regular photo contest

i can’t tell you how many times that has happened to me. and probably will tonight 🙂

i was in russia in the spring of 1990. in red square. you know with the gold domed churches.

and forgot i had pictures until looking at the contest just now.

    i’m a dummy.

and to make matters worse i was talking to a friend about tonight’s contest during the day and thinking about some church shots i have on film from mexico. decided that i didn’t want to bother digging them out. BUT the russian ones are in a photo book 15 feet away and indexed for easy viewing. oh well, next time.
