ParticipantNice!
Oh, you might want to keep one of these handy:

ParticipantSwamp gas reflecting the moonlight?
/edit to ask: How much did you zoom in to get that final shot? It’s impressive

ParticipantI think a note about an optional allowable 4th entry (for this contest only) to complete the set would be fine. A requirement, though? No.
I’m leaning more this way the more I’m thinking about it. It’d stink if someone had 3 solid entries and got them dq’d because they didn’t know an optional fourth was allowed.

ParticipantWonder if it would be like dividing by zero to allow a fourth voting entry for this contest? If we did that, would we want to *require* all 4 elements/photos? Would it induce too much chaos?
This could make things legendary. Four required entries for the four elements? I love this idea – but it’d take a lot of other people agreeing before it made things official. I, for one, am in.

ParticipantI think the emphasis is supposed to be on the play of light and shadow across the subject. In that photo, the subject is pretty well lit even if the background isn’t. But I’m still wrapping my mind around this one, so I could be wrong.
Yeah, for this contest I’m taking it as the absence of light that’s supposed to be the most striking feature.

ParticipantIt’s your kid’s birthday, take all the pictures you want. Parents have been doing this since cameras became convenient – I don’t think people had to sign consent waivers when I was growing up to let my dad take pictures of everyone at the birthday party. The thing that has changed since then is the convenience with which the pictures get distributed online – before posting pictures of the kiddos, I’d ask permission. If one of them has an issue with it, then simple cropping or photo-editing them out would probably suffice if you want to share pictures of the group. I don’t think many parents will have a problem with this, though.
I was the default photographer for my niece’s birthday party. I took hundreds of photos, and sent them directly to family only. I left it to my brother and sis-in-law to distribute those photos to their friends as they saw fit, and if I were to post them later for a contest, I’d ask the parents first.

ParticipantI must admit I’m considering skipping out on this contest. There’s gonna be 1) the aged old hand together with the newborn one 2) The aged old couple of hands, with the caption ‘Married 92 years’ (or some such) and 3) the newborn asleep with the hand flipping the bird.
And I just can’t compete with that.
I have two ideas, both of high difficulty, shopping requirements, and no guaranteed voter appeal. I have a third option which requires my entrance into a religious venue, and I’m pretty sure cameras aren’t too welcome there.
//made to fail. 🙁
D’oh – one of my pictures falls right into one of your three guesses. Well, it’s a toddler, not a newborn, but still. I’ve been able to get some interesting shots that fall outside these categories, and it’ll be one of the few times I have some quality bees. If there are a lot of the cliche shots, voters could get tired of it fast and be more likely to vote for something different that stands out…
When it comes to sneaking into a religious venue, you could just try asking the priest/imam/rabbi/cult leader/druid for permission – so long as you’re not sneaking into a scientology center, it’ll probably be fine.

ParticipantThis project is still on my ‘to-do’ list. Haven’t had much luck finding an overhead projector nor scanner for cheap (craiglisters are so flakey!!).
Yeah, I’m going to have to sneak into work on the weekend and hope my bosses don’t find me and question my mentality. That limits me to what I can do with the scanner though – no breaking it apart to get cool effects 🙁

ParticipantGotcha. Thanks for clarifying 🙂

ParticipantRepresent a single element…when I think of the representation of air, I can imagine something like seeds blowing in the wind – but would the subject then be the seeds? Are we allowed to use items to represent the element that aren’t necessarily the element?

ParticipantI felt okay (not great, just okay) with my shots this week. Then I submitted, and looked at everyone’s submissions – WOW, I got totally blown out of the water. Really great photos this week, everyone! I have a feeling it’s going to be another vote-heavy week.

ParticipantHaven’t been to Mammoth in years, but there’s a LOT of photographic shots on that highway. Love this gallery.

ParticipantDunno that V’s and A’s together would fly since they’re different letters, but I think multiples should be fine–U-Man, correct us if we’re wrong!
It’s kinda like my uncle says after a night of drinking, “I’ve only had one beer. It’s been 7 or 8 of the same beer, so that’s just one.” 😆
Wow – I wrote that right when I woke up, and it means pretty much the opposite of what I meant, haha. Yeah, U-man will have to let us know – I was interpreting it as multiples of the same letter are okay, but if that’s not the case, it’d be good to get that info soon.
