ParticipantGuns, cameras, and old electronics–what’s not to love?
ravnostic
ParticipantYeah, I loved the lighting. Not so much the dust. Here are two more:

ParticipantThe third one (with the tree sticking out of the tree of sheep) has a really cool feel to it, especially.
It’s my favorite. Color wasn’t really adjusted much, either; they were kicking up a whole mess of dust that really gave an orange cast to the shots. I can take that out–but I likes it.

ParticipantI went out this morning to meet up with my brother Rob and take pictures of he and the kids. On the way, I Took a couple sunrise shots with the Darlot that I like, and then I got waylaided by 1000 sheep.
No kidding.
Apparently, some ranch moves them north this time of year. I had the Darlot project installed and was working on the fly, so that’s the lens that took the pictures. The ‘asterisk’ ‘waterhouse stop’ was installed at the time. I like the effects.

ParticipantSwamp Gas. Earth humor.
//Love it!
There are two shots. The first four above are at 70mm (Tamron 70-300mm). Starting with a native resolution of 3888×2492 full frame, I shrank to 480×720. The second shot I cropped proportionately so that the long side was equal to the previous short side. I progressed to the 4th image, then switched to the one at 300mm, and repeated the process. The last image is the 300mm at full resolution (i.e., no compression in the crop.)
These were taken September 11, 2009. I clipped the article from the paper that described what it was exactly, but I’ve mislaid it since then. I’m just glad I found the pictures while archive diving! I’d thought I’d lost them.
I suppose I could do the maths, but I’d wager a guess that the angular diameter was around 2-4 arc seconds. Something like that backlit by the moon would be incredible.ravnostic
ParticipantAre we gonna do the Caturday Crossover again?
Can we huh, please?

ParticipantYeah HDR and tone mapping software would be too far for this contest as it’s currently been suggested.
I thought as much. That’s OK, though, I think I can make some passable (maybe even vote-worthy) images from some of my subs. None of the panos I’ve posted here will be allowed in their present form, I’ll have to go back and see what I can do with a single set of exposure levels. The way my luck runs, I’ll be unable to enter due to being rode hard at work way out in Rooster Poot anyway…
Since we’re talking about panos, how do people like to host them? If I use picasa as usual it would be hard even for people who clicked through to get anything much larger than gets posted to the thread. I really want to use this one: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/pbvj4M-x7TyA93yvM8tB6wgoPNmLZef3e7s-RQjQBBY?feat=directlink
but it really needs to be viewed at larger sizes.I’ve been using flickr to post panos, sample here. Long panos are pretty ungainly for the web no matter where you host, though…
I’d be more than happy to host full-size res versions on my hosting site (zero restrictions there!). They can be emailed to me, I’ll upload them, and send the link. Just another option I’ll put out there.

ParticipantI must admit I’m considering skipping out on this contest. There’s gonna be 1) the aged old hand together with the newborn one 2) The aged old couple of hands, with the caption ‘Married 92 years’ (or some such) and 3) the newborn asleep with the hand flipping the bird.
And I just can’t compete with that.
Handprints and hands of statues are also in bounds. They don’t have the schmaltz of the ideas you mentioned, but this is fark where schmaltz is not held in high esteem.
Back east, it’s easy to get statues. A little harder to get good ones here–esp. cemeteries; there just aren’t many grand resting places that aren’t shaped like a pyramid (no, really; I can think of two off the top of my head).
But I will try. Shall I feel I fail, I can always not post them. Off to google and see if what I want/need is readily available.
Oh, and a co-worker gave me an idea he thought of that would be very appropriate, also. So if my 2 work out, that’s three.

ParticipantCount me in on 4. Or 3 if it doesn’t go.

ParticipantThe downside is no one can post their ‘*ahem*’ links to the same-type suggestion they made 6 months earlier.
But I agree–it was daunting, and if a person can word a contest in such a way as to appeal to more people and more quickly, then more power to them. Which leads me to a new theme suggestion…

ParticipantI actually bought two 10″ low-glare fresnal lenses for part of this project. If I can get all the stuff together, it will be an interesting marriage.
ravnostic
ParticipantYou can keep your Kes, so long as I can get 7 of 9.
And I’ll leave it at that.

ParticipantDon’t worry about the voting. Challenge yourself to come up with something no one else will have or try something you’ve seen someone else do that you haven’t tried yet. Besides Fark voters are fickle and some weeks I’m sure I’m going to go down in flames I wound up with a top 10.
This weekend I do have Saturday and Sunday off, but there’s the gay pride festival (I go to the party of a resident friend who happens to live on the street it travels) Saturday, and ‘hiking’ (park type)/photography with my brother and his kids Sunday.
I dunno. I like my 2 ideas (I’m pretty sure no one else will have done either of them), if I can finger out how to put them together.
Ha! I made a pun!

ParticipantIn the original theme thread, there’s a link to an article that explains the light staging, or the conditions that promote the effect naturally (golden hour, etc). I have oodles of ideas, and a chestful of archives–I do a lot of sunrise and sunset timed photography, which usually fit the bill, even if I didn’t know it at the time I took the shots.

Participant:blush:
I can’t help it, I’m sorry! *bites knuckle*
Power corrupts. 😆 😉
You’d have had a lot more to delete, had I not gotten in the habit of deleting my suggestions after a month or so if they don’t get so much as 1 vote.
I think we need to keep theme threads for contests that actually go green, at least until the contest is over or maybe a year or two, and maybe even foreverandever. They’re a good reference. My two cents.
