ParticipantDifficulty – The subject must be alive.
woah
Yeah, I can see where that might be a game-changer for you 😆

ParticipantI dunno… as with the photoshop queue, I’m a big fan of many choices and options.
While i may go through my physical archive for the Film Only week, there’s some hoppered themes I’m going to be skipping. It’s nice ot have something for everybody, and a whole lotta “stuff” cluttering the back of my mind when I’m out shooting.
Hell, when I was in Italy, I must have shot a solid 100 or more pics solely for the purpose of using them in upcoming hoppered contests (Curves among others).
Another option (just to up the complexity factor) would be to open up the order of the “Upcoming Events” to some sort of public input. For that we’d definitely want a lot of options. That’s an idea that’s probably a non-starter, but now it’s out there.

ParticipantIt’s ok I have been told there is beer in hell.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that it’s room-temperature Coors Light….

Participantgambitsgirl… it helps that it’s a good strong, beautiful photo. Had it been a crap photo of an emotional story, then you could worry about the pity vote. You also might not get quite the effusive praise people have been lavishing on it.
Your photo didn’t have the benefit of text, the way some (mine) did. Your context only made a strong image stronger, instead of shoring up a weak one.
Time to move on to state fairs and stern-looking chickens!

ParticipantWelcome to the world of fark voting yugoboy! That happens just about 70%wnhs of the time with me.
Thanx! I love the fact that I’ve got a top 10, but I’m not sure if you’re responding to something in this thread that someone else said, or this is an out of the blue congrats.

ParticipantBoth are good shots, but the first one… the closed meditative eyes… I get the point, but I would have either had her hands visible in some meditation pose, or bowed her head at least a little bit. The pic looks at first glance like a badly timed (but beautifully shot) snapshot.
(And I’m not 100% sold on the soft-focus flowers blocking significant portions of her torso. This is not the horn-dog in me talking, it’s just the composition… I’d want more “her” and less flower in that part of the image)
Lighting and balance are really good. For portraiture, it certainly is of very good quality.
Granted, this is just my opinion, but there it is.

ParticipantMostly CS3, but I’m fully capable of using GIMP if the copyright police catch me.

ParticipantMy B is from a major local cemetery. When I was trying to get my wife to help me decide between that and the Funerary Monument of Pope Alexander VII. When we were fist looking at it in Flickr’s lightbox (black background) the choice was much tougher than when we looked at it with the traditional white background, the choice became only slightly easier.
My first shot is from the town I teach college in. That gravestone (Frank Hodge) is really cool, and set among a whole lotta local veterans.
The other 2 are from my Italy trip (obviously).
I have a bunch of other shots, including a number of kids’ graves. I never even considered whether or not the childrens’ graves would be controversial.

ParticipantI have a B this week!

ParticipantI’ll plus 1 it if it’s 4-6 months out. I’d rather see another software hootenanny before a strictly HDR.
I’m with you on the time-frame. Those of us in northern climes are entering winter, and while I’m sure there’s some real nice stuff that can be done in winter, I’d love to be able to have some spring-time to shoot in… it’s the nature of HDR that some of us would not be able to archive dive as you’d need more bracketed shots than some of us take.
Just a thought. We were able to push State Fair until after the appropriate season, how about this one?
I’ll second the software hootenany, as well, just to be able to do more with Photoshop than tweak and crop.

ParticipantMy experiments with hdr were not exactly winners… but this would be an excuse to practice and hope for a lucky shot.
+1

ParticipantHow much does it have to appear “round”?
One of the ones I’ve uploaded and prepped for Wednesday is from inside the Pantheon in Rome. There’s curves, and half of the oculus is visible. If it’s not kosher, I’ve got time to make a change. I’ve got a few dome interiors I opted against using I could go back to.

ParticipantMopsy, can I ask what’s the story with that one of (I’m assuming) Niagara Falls? It looks like maybe a film or slidefilm image? Anything you can tell me about it, I’d love to know.
I’m only stopping in to confirm the location guess. I live about and hour and a half from there and use that bridge about 95% of the time we go in to Canada, and about 70% of the time we leave.
I can’t say anything about the technicals, but it probably was taken from one of the ubiquitous helicopters that one can rent a ride in. They’re so ubiquitous that a few years ago, a couple crashed into each other, and the rules have since tightened up to try to prevent a repeat.

ParticipantIn general we want themes to be as friendly and open as possible. I think that caveat was to discourage people from posting pictures from amusement parks, zoos and monster truck rallys, etc.
Thanx.
I have a couple that are obviously from the fair (there was a fried foods cart that was so blatant I couldn’t help myself… it may be included) but some of my better ones are close-ups of the animals.
Yugoboy
ParticipantThe “clearly show it’s from a fair” caveat now concerns me. I had forgotten that when I was at the fair this year. I want to use at least one animal close-up (there was a rooster giving me the serious stink-eye… really good look) You can see the bars, but that’s pretty much the only clue. Do I need to go with some other series from that trip?
