ParticipantI’ll add my nay vote to this for the same reasons that have already been mentioned.

ParticipantI wouldn’t worry about the fretting parents. It’s your party and you can shoot if you want to. If the parents don’t want their kid photographed, the onus is on them to speak up or keep their kid at home. I’ve been to tons of birthday parties for my daughter’s friends, and I’ve never seen this be an issue. It seems like every parent there has a camera and is snapping away.
Although I did have to sign a waiver at my daughter’s day care that allows them to photograph her during day care parties and events. Something about kids with modeling contracts or similar can’t be photographed.

ParticipantI must admit I’m considering skipping out on this contest. There’s gonna be 1) the aged old hand together with the newborn one 2) The aged old couple of hands, with the caption ‘Married 92 years’ (or some such) and 3) the newborn asleep with the hand flipping the bird.
And I just can’t compete with that.
Handprints and hands of statues are also in bounds. They don’t have the schmaltz of the ideas you mentioned, but this is fark where schmaltz is not held in high esteem.

ParticipantRav – I like the first one better. The detail on the bee is nice and the color in the background is lovely.

ParticipantThis was a Christmas gift from dear husband. My first thought was that I will be advertising that I have all my camera shit in a bag and asking to be knocked over the head. I didn’t have the heart to return it. It will be awesome when I want to carry all the gear I own plus a laptop.

The downside is the front lens pouch. It holds a lot but if you are absent-minded and pick the bag up with the flap open, you’ll fling your crap out on to the ground. Incidentally this is how my external flash earned a trip to Nikon service. I think I’m going to buy this for a quick trip bag. I tend to go out with one lens and shoot with it the whole day.

ParticipantHaving just flung my external flash out of my bag onto the ground (inches from being in the Tennessee river) rendering it useless, I vote for redundancy.

ParticipantI fooled around in the front yard and this is the best I could do. Hazy night and suburban lights don’t make for good shots of the moon.

ParticipantI like the blacklight. It’s not an entirely black composition but close. I like the use of negative space. I never do that and I should.
Gary II is my #2 choice.

ParticipantThis should probably be in Tips and Tricks but I’m posting it here just in case someone else needs the advice y’all offer. How do I photograph something glass without getting a reflection of the photographer or her stupid flash in the shot?
zincprincess
ParticipantHey, at least he wasn’t using a Kit Lens!
Or a pop up flash.
I’m sure the bride will be glad to have lots of pictures of the backs of all her bridesmaids. Frame-worthy, I’m sure.

ParticipantBut nuclear power is one of the safest and cleanest power sources we have discovered and we should hope that the damage to the plant due to a natural disaster will educate us on what we should prepare for in the future, not cause us to reject the technology as unsafe.
Keep repeating that to anyone who will listen. I fear that the talking heads and wackjobs will kill any future development of nuclear power in this country which would be disastrous for our economy and our national security.

ParticipantAre hand prints acceptable?

ParticipantThanks, Curious. I am pleased with the results.
Rav, The unemployment was awful, but as I look around, I realize others have had it much worse. We are still in our house, our relationship is solid, and we are not in debt up to our eyeballs (only to our shins). Our savings has taken a big hit but I feel pretty fortunate that we had savings to draw on. I am also really thankful that I have a solid job to keep us going. The lessons we have learned navigating this shitty time will be with us for a long time ? perhaps forever ? and that is not a bad thing.

ParticipantMy dear husband has been unemployed for quite a while but recently landed a pretty good position for himself. Instead of sending me an email or text saying “I have a job offer” he sends me “Go ahead and order the macro lens today.” Love him. I ordered the 85 mm that I tried out a few weeks ago. I really dig it. Our local mall had an orchid sale / show this weekend. Below are a few shots I took with the new lens. You can see the full set on flickr.

ParticipantThanks! This week has been challenging so I was just glad to have found time to post at least one post before the contest went live. Also, a big “Thank you!” to zincprincess for suggesting I use a photo from the rainy windshield set for this contest. That was a great idea, I owe you one.
I would say you’re welcome, but you’re beating me! That’s the last time I make helpful suggestions. 😉
Well probably not. I’m glad it is going well. I would feel worse if it was a total flop.
